Last month, we got the fiscal year earnings report from Nintendo which detailed that 21.03 million Nintendo Switch consoles were sold between April 2019 and March 2020. Now, a new report from GoldenCasinoNews has revealed that 4.2 million of those Nintendo Switch consoles were sold in March 2020 alone. That accounts for around 20% of the year’s total console sales, the sort of figure you might expect during the holiday season. This is also nearly 1/3 of the total amount of Wii U consoles that was sold during its life cycle of 5 years, in just 1 month.
The large boost in sales likely is from the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which was highly anticipated, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic which has kept a majority of the world indoors.
The report also goes on to break down the Nintendo Switch sales by region. North America saw 20.61 million units sold, Europe comes in at 14.23 million, Japan at 13.4 million, and the rest of the world saw 6.95 million units sold. 55.77 million Nintendo Switch units have been sold as of May 2020, making it the 8th best selling home console of all time. This is behind Nintendo’s own NES console which sold 61.91 million. But with the Nintendo Switch only being around halfway through its life cycle, there’s still plenty of sales yet to come.
