505 Games Control Blunder: What’s Even Going on?

You may have seen a few rumblings about the 505 Games Control blunder… But what does that even mean? Essentially, it means that 505 Games did the supposed impossible and pissed off quite a few people in the process.

Recently, 505 Games announced that Control Ultimate Edition owners would be able to get a free next-generation upgrade. That sounds good, right? Then, people who owned the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game started seeing a free upgrade on their PlayStation Stores. Another thing that sounds good? Wow!

Then, though… People started having this free upgrade to Ultimate Edition reversed. There’s also the small fact that 505 Games said that was impossible.

505 Games Control Blunder Does the Impossible

The issues regarding this, aside from removing Ultimate Edition access unbeknown to the players, is that 505 Games previously stated that the transition between Digital Deluxe and Ultimate Edition was impossible. Yeah, it’s a little bit odd… Right?

Control’s Digital Deluxe Edition contains the same content as the Ultimate Edition. The only difference is the proposed next-generation upgrade that 505 Games previously announced. Essentially, Control’s Ultimate Edition is a “Game Of The Year”, of sorts… A re-packaging that offers the complete Control experience in one box, now that the third expansion has been released.

505 Games’ decision to only offer the next-gen upgrade to Ultimate Edition owners was already controversial, with 505 Games stating the following…

The upgrade path that we are offering is only possible when upgrading from the same version of the game. As we are only doing additional development on Control Ultimate Edition on the next-gen platforms, we are unfortunately unable to offer an upgrade path to all existing Control players.

Yet… Somehow, people started to get the upgrade? Here’s a Tweet that Metro pulled up which is just one instance of this happening.

This has all only stoked the fires of controversy further, as it is clearly a do-able process. As of writing, 505 Games have reversed the upgrade of anybody who claimed it and is yet to comment.
