6 Games That Need a Reboot

Updated:
Far Cry 6, Ubisoft

In the last ten years, we have seen very different trends of video games. The rise of indie games, the revival of survival games, the resurgence of horror games, exclusive games determining the limits of technology. They all have their own pros and cons. But apart from these, the trend that has left its mark on the last few years is definitely remake and remastered games. We want to add one more next to them: 6 Games That Need a Reboot.

We play remakes of many games released in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Some are very successful like Resident Evil 2, while others like GTA Definitive Edition cannot exceed mediocre. What about game series that have lost their purpose and need to be reset? So now we can start looking at video game franchises that need to be reset to be successful again.

Please don’t forget that these suggestions are not about remakes or remastereds. These are for the hard reset.

Silent Hill

Let’s get the most obvious out of the way first. You know Silent Hill, one of the best and classic horror series in gaming history. After great first games, the series survived until 2014, with more than mediocre sequels. Afterwards, the series reappeared with the rising PT demo in the hands of Hideo Kojima, which was canceled by Konami. What follows is complete darkness, silence and a few thin gossip.

All we know about Silent Hill right now is that the rights are still held by Konami. Although there are rumors that Kojima is developing a special SH game for Sony from time to time, nothing is finalized. There is no need for this anymore because the name Silent Hill is very tired and needs a reset.

It’s highly unlikely that Konami will make a great Silent Hill game. That’s why we suggest and want the rights to be bought by Sony and reset the series. Then a new Silent Hill could be made, like PT, which has shed light on hundreds of indie horror games.

Prince of Persia

While making the list of games that we think will be disappointing in 2022, Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake was on the list. The main reason for this, of course, is that the project has never gotten out of trouble. But the underlying reason is that the series badly needs a reset.

If you started playing with Assassins Creed games, the Prince of Persia series might not be that important to you. After all, Ubisoft preferred the AC series and used all the mechanics of Prince of Persia in the new assassination game. At that point, the future of PoP was already dark, but I never thought it would get this far.

We’re talking about a game series that started in 1989. A series whose last new game was released in 2010 and which has been in silence for the past 12 years (the era of AC games). Of course Ubisoft has the ability to do a great reboot, but we doubt if they’ll do it.

Duke Nukem

No matter what game of Duke Nukem you play, you will find that it is different from thousands of other games on the market. That’s what made it one of the most successful series of the ’90s anyway. We definitely need a new Duke Nukem with its unique humor and never ending action.

Gearbox Software bought the rights to Duke Nukem in 2010, after which they developed Duke Nukem Forever. The game turned out exactly as it should, it wasn’t perfect, but it had all of its own unique features. At that time, everyone thought that the series would continue, but it didn’t. Although there are rumors that a new game is being developed for a while, the future of the series has been in the dark for 11 years.

The series, which has four main games and 11 spin-offs in total, is very tired. The best thing to do right now is to completely reset the series and introduce the next generation to the blonde-haired Duke. Because we all need an antihero that represents the 90s. We’re all looking forward to his cigars, his Hollywood muscles, his curses, his guns, and his unending rage against aliens.

Guitar Hero

You may be thinking, what’s the point of resetting a rhythm game? After all, the story wasn’t that important in Guitar Hero games, except for its own little crazy jokes. I totally agree with you. But the reason I want Guitar Hero reset isn’t about nonexistent storyline, but rather to add a well-deserved campaign mode. Let me explain.

Music games are much more expensive to license nowadays, with DMC rules ruining Twitch and Youtube. The main reason why no new Guitar Hero has come in recent years is that the sales are not high enough to cover the license fee. That’s why the last GH game, Live, came out in 2015 and it’s all dark after that. The way to change this is to reset the series and add a story mode like sports games do.

Different types of music, 8-10 hours of single player story mode, endings that change according to our song performance… Everything seems to depend on this for Guitar Hero to write an unexpected success story. Or I miss the solos I played with the plastic guitar in the 2000s.

FEAR

The reason for FEAR’s success is a very simple but perfectly working fear equation. Scientific research gone awry, a little girl with supernatural abilities, weapons that make you think you can protect yourself, and a dark atmosphere. All the games in the series applied this equation so well that it managed to become one of the most popular horror FPS series ever. But where is it now?

Things get a little dark after that. The third game of the series was released in 2011, and three years later there was an unsuccessful attempt called FEAR Online. After that, Monolith Studio completely shifted its focus to other games and apart from a few rumors, we haven’t heard anything about the new FEAR game.

The studio is currently using all of its talent to develop the new Wonder Woman game. So it’s impossible for us to see a new FEAR game in the near future. Therefore, our greatest desire is to use this time to reset the series. Wouldn’t it be great if they came up with new concepts, reset Alma’s story, and gave us a revamped FEAR in 2024?

Far Cry

Ubisoft has been criticized for using similar math in all their games in recent years. These criticisms are not unfair at all, because all games released after Far Cry 3 are almost the same. Similar main villains, similar mechanics, similar atmospheres… It feels like all games are remastered versions of the previous one. This is exactly why the series urgently needs a reset.

When Crytek developed Far Cry in 2004, it managed to mark that period. Because it offered a sandbox freedom that no one expected. Everyone loved the ever-deepening story and the infrastructure that would later turn into Crysis on an island that looked magnificent. When Ubisoft bought the series, it created its own dynamics. Farcry 2 and 3 were successful, but the same cannot be said for the others.

No one wants to play a Far Cry that seems to have a standalone story but is completely the same as the previous one. Because these stories are not of the quality that we will be very sad when they are reset. Let’s not upset each other anymore and play a new trilogy with a quality story.
