The evolution of video games over the years has been inspiring. For almost 30 years we have been spending our time with these digital hobbies. Good, evil, superpowers, conflicts, wars, simulations, fantasy universes, science fiction, post-apocalyptic times… All this and more has been told while the games have changed a lot. One thing that has not changed is a common goal that makes games so entertaining: bosses. Here we go with the 7 most annoying bosses in video games.
When someone says “boss,” we all pretty much have the same thing in mind. It’s an amazing common language. This concept, which dates back to the days of arcades, does not always have to be a character. Sometimes it can be a very difficult song to play, and sometimes it can be a puzzle that is impossible to solve. The most important thing is that it can compete with us.
Before we continue with the list, we need to underline something. This list is not about the hardest bosses in games. We can talk about that in another article. Today we are going to talk about bosses that annoy us because of their great design and the problems they cause us, not because they are hard to defeat, but because of the methods they use.
No one experiences a game the same way anymore. Every encounter in online games means a completely new story. The only thing left from the old ones is bosses, and this is the time for celebrate that.
Table of Contents
Ellie – The Last of Us Part II
Although I do not agree with all of Naughty Dog’s decisions, I have to respect the game they have created. In The Last of Us Part II, which was the best game of the year in every way, there was a boss fight that will be remembered for a long time.
I am not talking about the incredible scene at the end of the game. I am talking about the fight where Ellie, who we have known for about 10 years, turns into a boss. Those 15 minutes when we play as Abby were mind-blowing, disturbing, and hilarious. If you look at the current state of the story, Ellie becomes even more irritable.
Through the Fire and Flames – Guitar Hero 3
If you were good with video games in the 2000s, you can not go past the Guitar Hero series. Aside from being the best rhythm games of that era, they left a great legacy. We can argue about which game is the best of the series, but the most iconic one has not changed in a long time: Guitar Hero 3.
The last song of the game, played by Dragon Force, was fun and painful in every way. We do not need to explain too much, because world record attempts are always made with this song. Good old days.
Mad Tongue Alberich – Elden Ring
If it’s a FromSoftware game, it’s perfectly normal that all bosses are hard. You can even blindfold and call them annoying. But Elden Ring has a mini-boss that is far from being the most difficult. His name is Mad Tongue Alberich and my god I hate him.
When you first come to Roundtable Hold, you will start exploring quite innocently. You’ll meet a lot of NPCs, upgrade your weapons and take on new quests. Then suddenly you’ll forget that you are in FromSoftware game and jump off a balcony. Then this lousy mini-boss appears.
I will not go into too much detail. Of course, it’s up to you not to jump back when you die. But you have to kill this demon to get your lost runes when you die. And that’s where the frustration begins. Imagine that you have fallen into a trap. Again and again and again.
Sigrun, Valkyrie Quenn – God of War
I was very undecided whether to include Sigrun in this list. The reason is that it is already mentioned in dozens of lists of the “toughest video game bosses” on the Internet. It’s certainly very difficult, but I find it rather frustrating.
There are two main reasons for this. The first is that it’s an additional challenge that you try to overcome after completing God of War. If you do not succeed, you’ll be even more annoyed. Because you will not be able to finish the game that you should have closed a long time ago.
Secondly, and this is the main reason, you keep dying through your own fault when you think you have learned the attack sets accurately. Considering that it would fit any FromSoftware game, it’s perfectly normal for it to be frustrating.
Mr X – Resident Evil 2 Remake
We can argue for a long time about remakes and remastered versions of old games. We have seen the very bad ones as they are very good examples. It is another topic, but Resident Evil 2 is a fabulous one.
After years of making the original game in 1998, the remake was really good. And we got back with one of the evil characters that hit the 2000s. MR X is very scary in every sense, from his looking to his powers.
The boss fight in the original was also very impressive. But the 2019 version is tough, frustrating and very entertaining in every way. Especially when you have increased the difficulty level, lots of nervousness and then relaxation awaits you.
Round 16 – Volfied
I would like to take you to 1989. As I said at the beginning of the post, bosses are in our lives for a long time and all are left of the classic games. This classic arcade game with science fiction and space themes is one of them.
Each level of Volfied can be considered as a boss fight. 16 levels and 16 bosses that get more and more difficult. Things going crazy in the last level. The mechanics of the game are so sensitive that you lose lives for a single mistake. Losing lives in arcade games does not mean the percentage they have now.
It’s absolutely not very difficult, but I promise to it will annoy you until you pass.
Fenrir – Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Hellblade was an amazing adventure. The story, the atmosphere and the theme it followed was different from many games on the market. That’s why we all really enjoyed it and now we are looking forward to Hellblade 2. One of the reasons that I love the first game so much, was actually simple but frustrating boss fights.
This boss is Fenrir. Don’t be confuse with the wolf one in mythology, the version in the game looks a little more pig. Fenrir has a high HP, different attack sets and you have to constantly fight against a runaway. That is why it is annoying.
Just like in the Souls games, you will be punished very quickly if you lose concentration in a moment.
That’s it! This is our list for the 7 most annoying bosses in video games.
