Aspyr Media reportedly working on a Star Wars: KOTOR game

Published:

A new Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic game is being developed by Aspyr Media. A Star Wars KOTOR game has been amidst rumors for quite a while now, and it seems like the rumors were indeed true.

The reports of the development of a new Star Wars KOTOR first popped up in a thread on Resetera, where prominent game journalist Jason Schrier mentions that nobody will be able to guess who is behind the next KOTOR game. Star Wars insider Bespin Bulletin also mentioned during an episode of the B.O.B. the Podcast that the game is not being developed by EA or Bioware. This was further corroborated by Wushu Studios’ communications manager Nate Najda who states that the studio behind the game is not as mysterious as people think, however, it is not a household name.

Now it seems like we have finally got some information about the studio behind the next Star Wars: KOTOR game. Earlier today, Embracer Group, the parent company of Koch Media and THQ Nordic acquired Aspyr Media and Gearbox Software. In a press release, it mentions,

“Aspyr currently has several games under development including one major ongoing game development project with an approximate budget of USD 70 million that is expected to become an important for the entire group. These development projects will engage more than 200 internal and external developers with the core team in Austin, Texas, and will contribute to Embracer’s release slate in the coming years.”

Soon after the PR was released, a Resetera thread was started discussing about whether the title in development by Aspyr Media is Star Wars: KOTOR. Jason Schrier once again wrote a couple of comments on the thread, which all but confirm that Aspyr Media is actually working on the next Star Wars: KOTOR game.

With Embracer also stating that the title in development by Aspyr Media is a licensed title, it seems quite likely that the speculations are indeed true. Aspyr Media is known for its ports of Star Wars games, so it remains to be seen how they pull this off. That being said, considering all this is not official, it should be taken with a grain of salt.
