The next-generation is right around the corner, with the Xbox One and Playstation 4 soon to be replaced by the upcoming Xbox Series X and Playstation 5. With the close of the current-generation, let’s look back at the best Playstation 4 games of all time.
Its hard to believe that the Playstation 4 was released 7 years ago, time really does fly. The Playstation 4 has become the most dominating console ever in terms of sales. The PS4 has regularly outsold the PS2 during the specific month of its lifecycle, however the PS2 will likely outsell it overall due to long lifecycle that the PS2 had. Did you know the last game to be released on the Playstation 2 was Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, released just 3 weeks before the launch of the Playstation 4.
Overall the console has sold over 112 million units, making it the second best selling home console of all time behind the Playstation 2. In comparison the main competitor, the Xbox One, sold just over 50 million units.
It will be interesting to see whether Sony can keep that lead going into the next generation. Despite a slightly weaker console, Sony has a huge head start on initial player base along with a strong library of exclusive titles.
But we’re here to focus on the current-generation, so let’s dive into this list.
10. Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the PS4’s first smash hit games. Player control a hunter through a post-apocalyptic world ruled by robotic creatures. The gameplay is fluid and intuitive and very expansive, you can sink dozens of hours into this game with little effort.
A new Horizon game is due out on Playstation 5 soon so now is the perfect time to check this one out. Horizon Zero Dawn is also available on Steam for non-PS4 owners.
9. God Of War
Kratos is now a middle aged grizzled warrior who just wants to wind down and live a peaceful life in the woods. Well that wouldn’t be a fun game would it? . For the first time in the series, there are two protagonists: Kratos, the former Greek God of War who remains the only playable character, and his young son Atreus. Following the death of Kratos’ second wife and Atreus’ mother, they journey to fulfil her request that her ashes be spread at the highest peak of the nine realms. Kratos keeps his troubled past a secret from Atreus, who is unaware of his divine nature. Along their journey, they encounter monsters and gods of the Norse world.
God Of War scored near universal praise and is tied with the original God Of War game as the highest scoring game in the series, and one of the overall highest ranked games on the Playstation 4. A definite essential game to have in your PS4 library.
8. Marvel’s Spider-Man
Spider-Man is back on top form, after a long stint of sub-par games. Marvel’s Spider-Man launched back in 2018 as a PS4 exclusive and instantly became a smash hit among fans. Flying around New York using your web is as fun as it sounds. The game became such a hit that it has spawned a sequel, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which will launch on November 12th/19th a PS5 launch title.
7. Final Fantasy 7 Remake
15 years after a remake was first teased with the PS3 Tech Demo from E3 2005, Final Fantasy 7 Remake finally released in April 2020. The remake is actually only the first part in the series, focusing on the events that took place in Midgar. Final Fantasy 7’s story has been drastically fleshed out, the original Midgar section took around 4 hours to complete, whereas FF7R takes around 40 hours. The 1997 game shipped on 3 discs and Midgar wasn’t even half of disc 1’s content, so this game could take a while to fully release. FF7R’s graphics are among the best on the system, Midgar is extremely detailed and feels like a real vibrant city. This time around I definitely felt a much stronger connection to the characters, and it was great to have Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge be prominent in the game. FF7 is ranked among the greatest games of all time and this remake definitely lives up to that standard.
6. Ghost Of Tsushima
Ghost Of Tsushima became an instant when it was released. The open world Samurai game blends open world exploration, smooth combat and gameplay along with an in depth story full of lore. You will rarely hear a bad word said about this game, that is saying something.
5. Red Dead Redemption 2
Cowboy GTA made a return in 2018 with the hugely anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 “follows outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang. Arthur must deal with the decline of the Wild West whilst attempting to survive against government forces, rival gangs, and other adversaries. The story also follows fellow gang member John Marston, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption.”
Rockstar know how to make an open world game, filling the world to the brim with things to explore, missions to complete, and a whole host of wacky characters and interactions. Rockstar put on a video game clinic with RDR2 and it is currently the highest rated game of this generation on Metacritic with a huge score of 97/100.
4. Resident Evil 2
After nearly a decade of action focused Resident Evil games, the series went back to horror with RE7 before the long awaited Resident Evil 2 Remake was released in 2019. The original RE2 came out way back in 1998 and is often hailed as the greatest Resident Evil game, and with good reason. Taking place during the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City, the game sees Leon Kennedy make his debut as a rookie cop, along with Claire Redfield, sister of Chris from the first game. The story is fantastic and intense, graphically it looks amazing and the game really knows how to make you feel attached to the characters. This is the best that Resident Evil has been in a long time.
3. The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3 took the gaming world by storm, with over 1.5 million people pre-ordering the game and it outsold The Witcher 2 by 600% in its first week. To date The Witcher 3 has sold over 28 million copies and have won numerous awards, including multiple Game Of The Year awards. The Witcher 3 is a mammoth of game, easily giving players hundreds of hours of content and still being able to find something to do. It will be interesting to see if Cyberpunk 2077 with live up to expectations when it is released next month, because The Witcher 3 is a big act to follow.
2. Grand Theft Auto V
Finally we have Grand Theft Auto V, the game that will soon span 3 console generations, first making its appearance on the PS3/Xbox 360. What is there left to say about GTA V? The game is as close to a masterpiece as you can get. The world is massive and rich, the story arc is very fulfilling, and there is tonnes of replayability post-story. And that’s before you dive into the online mode, which while it is a cesspool with the amount of toxicity among players, it provides endless content for gamers to enjoy. GTA V broke many records, generating over $1 billion in sales in its first 3 days of release. It has sold over 135 million copies, making it one of the highest selling games of all time, and has raked in billion for Rockstar and Take Two.
1. The Last Of Us 2
The Last Of Us 2 is without a doubt THE game of 2020. TLOU2 is a masterclass in video game story telling and character development. The game plays with every single one of your emotions in the best way possible. Graphically the game looks stunning too, with very lifelike character models and at times it feels like you’re watching a movie.
If you own a Playstation 4, this is an essential game that you need to play and own. Naughty Dog once again proved why they are a premiere development studio.
