What Are the Best Video Games of 2019?

The end of 2019 is almost here. Before we get too excited about the games coming out in 2020, let’s look back on all the best video games of 2019. This year was great for old series with a few new additions.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends was extremely popular when it first came out, and it still is. It is a battle royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. The game brought a new perspective to the genre with heroes that have unique abilities instead of everyone getting the same character as in Fortnite and PUBG. It is also more team-based. In the game, you work in teams of three to eliminate the other players until you are the last team standing. Apex Legends has a good competitive scene as well. If you are interested, we have a guide on how to rank up in Apex Legends.

Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry is a high action hack and slash adventure with combo-based combat that rewards skill. After an attempted reboot with DmC, Capcom took us back to the original characters and continued the series with Devil May Cry 5 and a campaign that follows Dante, Nero, and a new character. The game was released on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and is on Steam.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

My personal favorite of the best video games of 2019. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical turn-based RPG much like other games in the Fire Emblem series. The core gameplay is split between wandering a monastery while completing small tasks, training students, and combat. The story is all about the characters and the class you choose. I spent hours playing through the game more than once. There are multiple endings and plenty of variety in training students. If you like turn-based combat and team building, this is a must-play game for you. The game is a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 continues in the series’ footsteps as a first-person shooter RPG. If you liked the previous Borderlands games, you’ll like this one. It’s like playing the older games but with new characters, abilities, more guns, and better graphics. The game provides plenty of action, humor, and replayability. Borderlands 3 is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The Outer Worlds

It’s been a while since a good large-scale RPG that’s not part of an older series came out, but The Outer Worlds is just that. The game is a spiritual successor to Fallout. It can be a bit buggy at times, but overall, it gives the classic RPG feel with loot, weapons, and story choices. If you like Mass Effect, Fallout, or even Skyrim, then The Outer Worlds is worth looking at. It’s available with Xbox Game Pass, or you can buy it for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or PC. The game will be released for Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is an adventure game great for anyone. In the game, you play as Luigi exploring a haunted hotel while trying to save his friends. It’s a continuation of Luigi’s adventure facing terrifying ghosts like in Luigi’s Mansion and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, but this time, his friends were captured while taking a vacation. The game brings a new flavor to the series with themed floors, new mechanics, and new puzzles. It also has a multiplayer mode for parties in addition to the single-player campaign. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Planet Zoo

This game is for all those creators, managers, and simulation lovers out there. Lately, tycoon games have been getting a bad reputation, and the newest Zoo Tycoon game for the Xbox One (bet you forgot about that one) is no different. However, the creators of Planet Coaster stood up to face the difficult genre and make another impressive game, this time for creating a zoo. Planet Zoo lets you create and manage a zoo, including all of the people and animals within. The game goes in-depth with animals, each with pages of information that can be used to create the best habitat possible for each type of animal. It also gives you creative tools to make human visitors just as happy. Planet Zoo is available on Steam.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

A lot of controversies have surrounded these games, but now that they are finally out and reviews are in, I can say personally that the game is fantastic. It’s a great adventure with lovable characters and interesting Pokemon. The games use the classic Pokemon formula and the animations are a bit dated, but compared to other Pokemon games, I felt the characters were more dynamic and the story was engaging. It’s a fun game overall and worth playing for any fan of turn-based combat. Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Finally, a good Star Wars game that’s not a Lego Star Wars. This action-adventure is an exciting new story in the Star Wars universe with puzzles, platforming, and most importantly Jedi combat. The game captures the power of a lightsaber while still providing a level of difficulty for the player, which has been a struggle in previous games. It’s great for any adventure fan or Star Wars enthusiast. There is a more in-depth review of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order if you are interested. The game is also available for multiple platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Best Video Games 2019: Honorable Mentions

Tropico 6: A simulation game about managing your own government and islands.

World of Warcraft Classic: This was huge when it came out, but it’s a more of a rerelease.

Death Stranding: There are a few mixed opinions about the game. Overall, it’s a good game and an interesting one. It also has a lot of celebrities in it.

Halo: Reach: The Halo series is finally coming to PC. It’s an old game, but one of the best.

That’s it for the best video games of 2019. There are plenty of other good games from this year that may not have been as overwhelmingly popular. What are your favorites from this year?
