In Black Ops Cold War, Die Maschine is the first Zombies map coming to the newest Call of Duty game. It’s more than just a nod to Nacht der Untoten, the map that started it all, and features a brand new chapter in the Zombies story.
Die Maschine is the first Zombies map to come with Black Ops Cold War and sets up a story that will develop throughout the Zombies mode with future maps.
The map itself is set in the early 80s, fitting perfectly into the larger timeline of Black Ops Cold War.
“Die Maschine takes place in the early ’80s, but its roots reach back even further into the past.”
In Die Maschine, Blacks Ops Cold War Zombies Pits Two Teams Against One Another
In this Zombies storyline, Requiem and the Omega Group are pushed head to head in their pursuit of an explanation of these unexplained events and an investigation into methods of harnessing them.
Requiem is a CIA-backed international response team led by Grigori Weaver, a returning character from Black Ops. Their primary objective is to explore the World War II bunker “that hasn’t just been ravaged by time” to investigate what’s going on.
The bunker has been left in ruins, crumbling after decades of disservice and ignorance. However, the secrets within, that players will discover through Die Maschine, could upend the world order if found.
Meanwhile, the Omega Group is a soviet-led team that rivals Requiem with their own attempts to investigate these anomalous events and harness the untold powers of these unexplained global phenomena.
“Between Requiem and Omega Group, there are plenty of characters who may aid or hinder your journey, while others have separate, unknown agendas that will be up to players to discover. Among this cast, there is one particular contact – Sam – who seems eager to share intel discovered from deep within the KGB.”
Samantha Maxis Returns
This particular contact, Sam, is actually the return of Samantha Maxis.
Samantha is the daughter of Ludvig Maxis, who you may know of. Maxis, along with Richtofen, was instrumental in the creation of the Hellhounds and Teleporters, with Group 935.
In the Zombies timeline, Maxis was betrayed by Richtofen and a desperate attempt at stopping the mad Doctor began that spans across the Zombies timeline.
Richtofen teleported Maxis to The Crazy Place, as featured in Origins, and Samantha to the M.P.D., as featured in Moon. However, while he was wreaking havoc with his unnatural creations… Maxis was formulating a plan. A Crazy plan, but a plan nonetheless.
When Richtofen activated the M.P.D. and entered the Aether within, Maxis switched Smantha’s soul with Richtofen’s. Then, Richtofen (Samantha), enlists Dempsey, Nikolai, and Takeo to launch missiles at the Earth in an effort to link the planet to the Aether.
This ends up with the destruction of the world. I think it’s safe to say Black Ops Cold War is taking a slightly more believable route with it’s branch of the Zombies storyline, however the prominent inclusion of Samantha Maxis can’t be a coincidence.
With multiple timelines featuring throughout the Black Ops Zombies storyline, there’s no telling what could happen.
This is only the start of the Die Maschine story. Treyarch have kept Easter Eggs and side-quests within the mode disabled in order to prevent anyone playing prior to general release from spoiling the mysteries hidden within.
