It’s been a couple of days now since Byleth was announced as Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s fifth Fighter Pass DLC character. You might, like I was, be wondering who Byleth was. Well, here’s a little something to keep you up to date on the newest Smash Fighter.
Byleth is the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the sixteenth installment in the series. Yeah, I didn’t know there were sixteen Fire Emblem games either. They are also the eighth Fire Emblem character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. This is obviously a heinous crime given we still don’t have Samurai Goroh from F-Zero, but who am I to judge…

Who is Byleth?
Byleth can be played as either a male or a female character and remains silent throughout the game. They are also shown to notoriously lack emotion, whether they have them or not. This emotionlessness is due to Byleth’s complicated birth.
After being born in a critical condition, Byleth had the Crest Stone of Flames placed within his heart to save his life. Cool side-effect: they were also trying to reawaken the goddess Sothis. Uncool side-effect: this killed Byleth’s mother, so Byleth became a member of the mercenary troop led by his father. You can understand why he would be a bit sadder than most.
In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Byleth is subject to an unknown event which awakens a power within them. They then decide to go to the Officer Academy in the Garreg Mach Monastery in which they are offered a teaching role.

In terms of Super Smash Bros, Byleth’s attacks will come from the Sword of the Creator and the Heroes Relics from the Fire Emblem games. They reportedly have low mobility, but that isn’t always a bad thing if you can pack a punch. They will also come with a new map based on Fire Emblem’s Garreg Mach Monastery, eleven additional music tracks from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and a number of new Spirits.
Byleth’s Final Smash is also called Progenitor God Ruptured Heaven, which sounds like the best/worst band name ever. It will let Byleth team up with Sothis, which can’t be a bad thing.

But wait, there’s more!
Since Byleth’s announcement, Nintendo has also announced that there will be a further six DLC fighters coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate by the end of 2021. There is little information on who these fighters may be, but Byleth will be available to purchase or download as part of the Fighter Pass, on January 28th. Fighter Pass 2 will also be available to pre-purchase from the same day.
