It’s been seven years since the last major game in the Aliens franchise, Alien: Isolation, was released. Unlike Aliens: Colonial Marines before it, Alien: Isolation was a wildly successful attempt at survival horror, leaving fans of the franchise wondering where it would go next. The wait is over, and the newest Aliens game has been revealed to be a team-based third-person shooter called Aliens: Fireteam that takes place 23 years after the original film trilogy.
Aliens: Fireteam ditches the one-on-one tension of Isolation in favor of horde-based combat, à la Left 4 Dead or Vermintide. The game will have 20 different kinds of enemies, from Facehuggers to Praetorians, and will span across four different campaigns.
While the player team will consist of a three-man squad, there will be five playable classes to select from: Gunner, Demolisher, Technician, Doc, and Recon. These classes will also be customizable with unique abilities and perks, and every class will have a selection of 30+ weapons and 70+ modifications to play with.
Although this is the first substantial information released about Aliens: Fireteam, it was announced in 2018 that a new Aliens shooter was being developed, after FoxNext Games acquired fledgling developer Cold Iron Studios back in 2018. While this is the studio’s first game, members of the studio previously worked on MMOs such as City of Heroes and Star Trek Online.
Even though the game is coming from a completely new developer, Aliens: Fireteam looks like a promising experience. It might not be the most original concept ever, but it’s been so long since the last Aliens game that any news is good news. Aliens: Fireteam is slated for release on Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S this summer.
