Curse of the Dead Gods is a difficult game. It may look like other roguelikes, like Hades, but Curse of the Dead Gods brings a more oppressive atmosphere and advanced level of difficulty to the table. Fortunately, the game has ways to alleviate the difficulty, such as various healing mechanics. Here’s how to heal in Curse of the Dead Gods.
The first way to heal in Curse of the Dead Gods is directly tied to your base stats. Constitution is the stat which determines your maximum HP.
Therefore, increasing your constitution through any means will boost your maximum HP, and grant you more HP in the process. While it will not heal any of your currently missing HP, building up your constitution will allow you to take more hits regardless.
Offering to the gods
One of the interesting qualities of Curse of the Dead Gods is how you can handle loot you don’t want. Any loot which you find but don’t pick up can be offered to the Gods. This can provide a range of benefits, including gold, attributes, or reduced corruption.
Occasionally though, the offering bonus will be a heal. Most of the time the heal is fairly insignificant, around 3-5 percent max HP, but sometimes it’s the difference between taking one or two more hits.
Certain weapons will come with affixes. These will often be damage upgrades, but occasionally a weapon will come with an affix that gives it healing properties. These weapons will heal you for 1% of your maximum health every time you kill an enemy with it. These weapons are extremely powerful, and will greatly increase the longevity of your run.
There are also weapons that will heal you for a portion of critical damage dealt. These weapons are arguably even more powerful, as they are the only way to heal during boss fights. However, they are more rare than the weapons that heal on kill.
Relics are powerful passive items that give benefits when placed in your inventory. Similar to the heal-on-kill weapons, these relics provide a percentage max HP heal under certain conditions.
These conditions are often harder to meet than just getting kills, such as killing getting an environmental kill. However, they do vary, and some, such as the relic which heals you every time you pass through a door, should be picked up every run.
One more aspect of relics to note is that certain relics give a percentage boost to other healing effects. These are extremely powerful relics, and when combined with a weapon or other relic that gives healing, can be an extreme boost to your run’s longevity.
If all else fails, Curse of the Dead Gods will often provide weary treasure hunters with Havens, rooms that contain no enemies or treasure, and are instead dedicated to healing. The heal provided from these Havens comes at a price though, and not in gold, Crystal Skulls, or Jade Rings like you may expect.
Instead, the price paid at Havens comes in the form of corruption. Each time the shrine is used will heal 20% max health and give 10 corruption. This makes Havens a powerful, but risky way to stay alive.
