Cyberpunk 2077 is set to be one of the biggest releases this year, due in part to the fantastic graphics, but it looks like some players will have to wait to truly realize all of these capabilities.
Marcin Momot, the Global Community Lead at CD Projekt Red, revealed (in a Twitter reply) that ray tracing capabilities will not be supported on AMD graphics cards for the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. However, they are supposedly working with AMD to get this feature to players as soon as possible. This is a pretty big blow to fans of AMD as ray tracing on modern graphics cards is a pretty prominent (yet fairly new) feature and one that many people are willing to dish out hundreds of dollars to obtain and use.
What is Ray Tracing?
“Ray tracing is the advanced graphics technique used to give movies their ultra-realistic visual effects. NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs contain specialized processor cores designed specifically to accelerate ray tracing so the visual effects in games can be rendered in real time.”Credit: Nvidia
While ray tracing will not be supported on AMD cards for the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red did work with Nvidia as an “official technology partner” to bring ray tracing to Cyberpunk 2077 with Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics cards. It does seem a little strange that ray tracing would be supported on Nvidia cards and not AMD cards if both are able to utilize real time ray tracing for other games? I suppose there’s not much that can be done since the game comes out (hopefully) on December 10, 2020.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that ray tracing isn’t going to be supported on AMD cards for the launch of Cyberpunk 2077? Or do you use an Nvidia card or a console? Let us know in the comments below!
