In Elite Squad, UMBRA (Fictional Terrorists) uses the Raised Fist as their symbolic imagery. It is almost identical to the raised fist adopted by the Black Lives Matter movement.
In the opening sequence of Elite Squad, a raised fist is used as a symbol for UMBRA. In the game, UMBRA is a “faceless organisation” that is orchestrating terrorist attacks across the globe in an effort to create chaos and weaken governments. This is being done “at the cost of many lives” and ultimately paints UMBRA as villainous characters.
So it makes sense that fans of the series would have an issue with the Black Lives Matters movement being seemingly portrayed in this fashion. In the midst of what is going on around the world, you’d think they’d be more clued up to this.
What makes the situation even more interesting is one of the game’s narrative designers has taken to Twitter to criticize the use of this imagery.
Brenden Gibbons was reportedly an external writer working on character bios and didn’t have any input. He was under the impression that UMBRA was a “James Bond”- level villainous group, like SPECTRE.
Ubisoft Statement on Pulling Raised Fist Imagery
“ Imagery that appeared in the opening video sequence of Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad featuring a raised fist was insensitive and harmful in both its inclusion and how it was portrayed. We have listened to and appreciate the players and the broader community who have pointed it out and we apologise. The raised fist imagery will be removed in the next title update this Tuesday, 1st September on Android and as soon as possible on iOS.”
