The LEC Summer Split started only a few weeks after the end of MSI 2021 and the first match (as per tradition) was between MAD Lions and G2 Esport. The defending champions had a really close fight with the ex-title holders, however, it would seem that the fatigue and the need to adapt to the new meta was too much for MAD. We had the chance to talk to MAD Lions’ jungler Elyoya about his experience at MSI, the new meta and the new junglers he will face in the LEC 2021 summer split!
Written below is the transcript of Elyoya’s interview. Bold font goes for the media’s questions and standard font signals MAD Lions’ Elyoya’s answers.
How are you feeling after that first game against G2?
I’m feeling a bit angry that we lost and the way we lost, but it’s fine.
During MSI, you played against the likes of Canyon, and Wei, Worlds champion and an MSI champion respectively. How much has playing against them changed you as a jungler, and how much will that experience help you going up against the other teams in the LEC?
I think I grew a lot during MSI individually, I think right now I read the enemy way better than I used to and I think as a player I’ve improved so much during this MSI. I’m a bit saddened that I couldn’t show it on my first performance but I think overall my read on the map is way better.
The game today, in the beginning, looked like a close game, you had a good start and a good mid-game, but then G2 took over and managed to dominate, do you think pressure and tiredness got the better of you?
I think it for sure affected us, since we’ve been scrimming for a few days we didn’t really have much time to practice this patch and I think our read of the meta might not be the best, but overall we knew the beginning of Summer Split wouldn’t be ideal or wouldn’t be as good as we want to but that’s something we are fine with and we expect to spike during Playoffs, the second part of regular split which we think it’s what matters the most.
Speaking of this patch Viego is finally enabled after all these months and Gwen is making her debut as well! Do you think these are champions that you will have time to prepare and if so which one of them do you like the most? Would you like to play Viego or Gwen jungle since she’s been prominent in the solo queue?
I like more Viego but I think Gwen is more Op, so I’d rather have the Gwen if I could choose right now but I prefer Viego as a playstyle and I think both champs are gonna dominate the meta, I think both champs are in a fine spot, maybe Viego is a bit weaker but for sure I think Gwen is gonna be a really really op champ… I mean she is for sure.
So do you think the new meta for this LEC Summer Split will still be very jungle dependent like it was for MSI?Or do you think it will change?
I think it’s still gonna be jungle, I think right now how the snowball works and how important objectives are I think jungle it’s still too op.
Do you think the new junglers will be able to bring to their teams as much as they should since this is a meta incentred on jungling?
I think they can find out styles that fit their teams quite fast, but I don’t think they’re gonna be at the top of the league. I think maybe Bwipo is like top 5-4 in my opinion, which I’m not so sure.. but maybe he does because he has a really good read on the map, but I don’t think they’re gonna dominate the league or be as good as maybe their other teammates, that’s my opinion on it but I might be wrong because I think jungler is a really complex role that it’s not really about mechanics or champions but more like understanding what lanes to play around that’s the hardest part and that’s why I think Bwipo can be a really good jungler because he has a really good read on the game
What are your expectations since you’re going against him in the Match of the Week, do you think he’ll put up a good fight or will you just take over as you did last time?
I think he will put up a good fight. I think since we’ve practised for a little time I think he’ll put up a good fight right now, but I think on the second part of the split I think it will be easier for us but yeah… I might be wrong.
MOBA, Open World, FPS, RPG and so much more! I appreciate any game with a good story behind it! Nowdays I write articles about games and competition but also organize and manage Esport tournaments.
"Aha, 42, I knew it! Now - er, what was the question again?"
