Epic Games Buying Fall Guys Developer Mediatonic

Epic Games, mainly known as the creators of Fortnite, announced on Tuesday that they were buying Tonic Games Group, the parent company of Mediatonic, creators of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. This follows various other acquisitions by the company, including the social media party app Houseparty and Psyonix’s Rocket League, both in 2019.

The news comes just under two weeks after it was announced that Fall Guys was coming to both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox platforms, following the February 17th Nintendo Direct. Despite the recent acquisition, there is no news regarding whether or not Fall Guys is coming to the Epic Games Store. The game will still be available on Steam and the Playstation Store.

As of now, none of the gameplay is changing either. When speaking on new features, Mediatonic wrote in a statement, “Fortnite and Rocket League already have tons of features we’d love to bring to Fall Guys- account systems, cross-play, squad vs. squad modes, etc… We’re going to work hard on bringing more of these features to Fall Guys too!”

Regarding going free-to-play, Mediatonic wrote that they had nothing to announce at this time.

The CEOs of both companies expressed their excitement over the purchase and what it could mean for the future of their games. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic, said “It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal. As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”

Dave Bailey, CEO and co-founder of Tonic Games Group, said the following:

At Tonic Games Group we often say that ‘everyone deserves a game that feels like it was made for them.’ With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us. They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team.

With Epic Games buying Mediatonic, the possible synergy between the two companies is near endless.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout debuted as a Playstation Plus title on August 4th of last year and received quite a bit of popularity. With the game also launching on Steam, it became a mainstay of quarantine enjoyment during the second half of 2020.

Currently, the game is in its third season, with the fourth expected to launch sometime soon.
