As a result of the ongoing pandemic, the Fortnite World Cup has been cancelled! Epic Games have announced that they are not planning on hosting any in-person events in 2021. Even the big ones.
Epic revealed the announcement that there will be no in-person Fortnite events in a blog post on December 4, 2020.
“Our intent is to eventually hold global in-person tournaments again, but our priority for any such event is the health and safety of our players and staff. With so much still unknown about what is practical and safe, we do not plan to hold in-person events in 2021, including a Fortnite World Cup. We will continue to provide online competitions throughout 2021 with the hopes that physical events, in some form, can return at some point in the future.”Credit: Epic Games
So it looks like we won’t be getting any in-person tournaments casted by CourageJD or DrLupo anytime soon…honestly a travesty. I loved the back and forth between the two during the last Fortnite World Cup in 2019. They’re both fantastic commentators, so I do hope that we will get to see them return in some fashion sooner rather than later.
As for the actual tournament, I’m sure this announcement from Epic has dimmed a lot of competitive players’ spirits as the Fortnite World Cup is the big tournament that players who play competitively strive even enter, let alone win.
It seems that the easiest solution would be to just host the Fortnite World Cup 2021 exclusively online, but there is so much going on behind the scenes with it all, it just wouldn’t work. Cheating, network connections, viewership, all of these things and a lot more are things that Epic has to consider and it would be nearly impossible to maintain it all.
While the news about the Fortnite World Cup 2021 being cancelled is unfortunate, we still are at the front end of the brand new Zero Point season, so it’s not all bad! Drop in and play as the Mandalorian and even Kratos right now!
