As the first round of the LEC playoffs concluded a few days ago, here’s everything to know for round 2!
The matches that will take place this week will be Fnatic vs. G2 Esports in the winner’s bracket and Schalke 04 vs. MAD Lions in the losers bracket before the winner of this match takes on Rogue.
All three matches are very interesting and exciting in their own right, due to the story that led these five teams to where they stand. So here’s everything to look forward to for next week’s LEC playoffs!
G2 Esports vs. Fnatic (Saturday, 29th)
This game deserves to be talked about first, for all the history it carries. In normal times, this match would have been a classic peak rivalry, a preview of the finals, and a high-action showdown between the two best teams Europe has to offer.
But the recent times have been all but normal, and that’s not just talking about the outside world. Both teams have looked very shaky through the Summer split, finishing out of the top 2 and even securing their playoff spot late into the season. While G2 has seemingly regained their form and gone back to their former frightening self, Fnatic’s 3-0 against Rogue was their only recent convincing performance.
This match is where one team looks to prove that it’s definitely back to being as dominant as it ever was, and the other seeks to show that their last sweep was what to expect of them in the future and not just a one-time overperformance.
Schalke 04 vs. MAD Lions (Friday, 28th)
All of the top 5 teams have an enigmatic power level. G2 and Fnatic are the old powerhouses that stumbled and are making their way back up. MAD Lions and Rogue dominated the split but just got exposed by the former kings, and Schalke 04 hit rock bottom before having the best second half-split of the league.
While MAD and Rogue have just faced off against G2 and FNC, nothing tells us where Schalke stands in all this – and they made quick work of their previous opponents, taking them down in a clean 3-0. This match will also be extremely important, as its winner will be the fourth European team that will go to Worlds.
The team that was seen for months as G2’s successors, or the team that buried itself, to come out of it in the biggest miracle run Europe has known? It’s this week that we’ll finally know which one is the stronger – and which one will be the LEC’s final representative at the Worlds Championship.
Rogue vs. Schalke/MAD (Sunday, 30th)
Rogue will face off against the winner of the previous match. Their situation is similar to that of MAD Lions, placing first in the regular season before Fnatic took them down 3-0, but were perceived very differently. Where MAD was feared and hyped by most, Rogue was dismissed by the other teams despite winning the most.
The stakes of this match will depend on the outcome of the previous one. For Schalke, it’s about writing one more chapter in the story of their miracle road from last to Worlds; for MAD Lions, about earning their rematch against the other semifinalists as this new team that has to be feared; and for Rogue, about reminding that there’s a reason they placed first in the regular season.
