Metroid Dread is the 13th installment in the franchise and will introduce a new episode to the series. Dread is set after the events of 2002’s Metroid Fusion, in which Samus investigates parasite X on planet SR388.
Producer Yoshio Sakamoto has assured fans that Dread will include a prologue outlining the events of Metroid Fusion, so that new fans can jump right in.
Dread will “mark and end” of the story arc between heroine Samus and her involvement with the Metroids and the X parasite and will include exploration on planet ZDR.
Is Metroid Dread related to Metroid Prime 4?
The short answer is no. Although Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime 4 exist within the same universe, there has been no confirmed connection between the two.
The Metroid Prime series exists after the original game in the timeline, but before the events of Metroid: Samus Returns.
The Metroid Prime games are also played in first-person, where Dread will harness the classic 2D environment.
Metroid Dread Gameplay
After Nintendo’s E3 Direct there was a Nintendo Treehouse Live feature which showed off some Metroid Dread gameplay.
Sakamoto revealed that the game’s title came from the “relentless threat” of the E.M.M.I. robots, and it was explained how Dread’s robots will keep to specific zones in gameplay. Samus will also be targeted by the robots if too much noise is made, resulting in a fast-paced chase.
It was also explained how stealth can be used to reduce noise levels, and objects can be hidden behind to keep away from the robots’ visual sensor.
Power up stations called “central units” and item collections from alien carcasses were also featured in the livestream, as well as Samus’ new Melee Dash attack.
Metroid Dread Weapons
In addition to Samus’ new Melee Dash, which allows her to ram into enemies, her free aim and counter attack will also be returning maneuvers.
Samus’ arm cannon is a returning weapon in Dread, and the aforementioned central units on planet ZDR will allow her to power up the arm cannon.
Phantom Cloak is one of Samus’ new abilities, allowing her to hide from robots to assist with stealth mode. The Spider Magnet is another new ability that allows her to scale the walls.
When will Metroid Dread Release?
Metroid Dread will be released on October 8.
The 2021 release of the Metroid Fusion continuation should bide fans’ time until the release of Metroid Prime 4.
