Evil Geniuses continue to shock in the Intel Extreme Masters Summer 2021 with a 2-1 win over world number 2 Heroic, securing their spot in the playoffs.
This was unexpected to many as EG has just recently fallen out of the top thirty in HTLV’s world rankings after their recent performance in cs_summit 8. Despite this, they have already upset two top fifteen teams in this important ESL Pro Tour tournament, as they have already beaten Team Spirit in the first round of the group stage.
EG edge out Inferno
The first half went the way of EG, but it was as close as it could be at ‘8-7’. The game continued neck and neck until EG seemed to pull away after round 22. They went on to win 5 straight rounds in a row to secure 15 round wins first. Heroic stepped up and managed to win the final 4 rounds of regulation, to force overtime. EG would take the map 19-17 after a stellar performance from their newest recruit Michał “MICHU” Müller. MICHU finished with 31 kills, the most on the server.
Heroic take Nuke
The series continued on Nuke, Heroic’s map pick. Yet it seemed that Heroic we’re going to go out with a whimper, as they ended their first half down ’11-4′. But after winning the first six rounds of the second half, Heroic cut the lead ’10-11′. Despite a resurgence of effort in EG’s T-side, Heroic restricted them to only 14 round wins, with the Danes ending the map in regulation ’16-14′.
EG’s second upset in IEM Summer 2021
The decider map of the series would begin with a dominant start once again from EG. They won 10 rounds in the first half and looked determined to finish the series quickly. But again, Heroic would fight back in the second half, getting the lead down to as close as ’11-13′. Their heroic efforts would not be enough, however as they would allow EG to claim match point first, before letting them take the map, and the series on round 29 ’16-13′.
With this win, EG has upset two top fifteen teams in IEM Summer 2021, in their two Group Stage games. The North American squad have secured their spot at the playoffs, a chance to regain confidence and form after failing to reach expectations since the start of 2021.
EG have secured their spot at the IEM Summer 2021 playoffs but will still play against Group B finalist OG to determine their seedings in the playoffs bracket. You can watch this series live on the ESL CS:GO twitch channel and you can check our Day 1 coverage of the tournament here
