The game developer, Facepunch Studios, creators of Rust, have reported that a fire caused large data loss at Rust, from their EU servers. The fire broke out at 12:47 am local time on March 10, at their OVHCloud Datacenter in Strasbourg, France.

“Unfortunately, the fire destroyed SBG-2 building. We’re expecting a large amount of data loss across the affected servers.” “25 of our EU servers remain offline due to a fire at OVH Datacenter in the early hours of this morning,”

Several hours later, the fire was extinguished and OVHCloud verified that no one had been injured. They sent out a warning that large amounts of player data have been lost, following a serious fire that destroyed many of the game’s EU servers.

The Twitter Rust account later confirmed “Data will be unable to be restored”, after assessing the total loss of the EU servers affected by the fire. It remains unclear exactly how many players will be affected by the event.

The studio is currently exploring how it can replace the servers that have been affected by the fire.

Firefighters were immediately on the scene but could not control the fire in SBG2″ Octave Klaba, boss of cloud server company OVH, said this morning. The whole site has been isolated which impacts all services in SGB1-4.

Rust’s console edition had initially been postponed due to the effects of COVID-19, but we heard recently that it will be coming to the PlayStation and Xbox this spring. The game first started in 2013 on PCs, but in 2020, popularity increased considerably as streamers flocked to the game.
