Fnatic Defeat Liquid at Masters: Reykjavík EU Derby

Published:

With a victory at the Masters: Reykjavík EU Derby, Fnatic complete the Lower-Bracket run and reach top 3 of the event. Knocked down by Sentinels, the European squad went on to defeat X10, Version1 and now Team Liquid to book a place in the Lower-Bracket Final.

Later on today, they will face NUTURN in the hopes of qualifying for a Grand Finals grudge match against Sentinels.

With Team Liquid using their ban to remove Icebox, Fnatic opt to start the series on Bind. Second map would be Ascent, with Split as the decider.

The series opener was a fair fight throughout the first half. However, with Fnatic moving to the offensive side, the black and orange took over the map, with a five round streak lending them match-point.

Adil “ScreaM” Benrlitom’s squad would hold the line for a little longer, eventually reaching double digits and threatening the overtime.

But it wasn’t meant to be, with James “Kryptix” Affleck left to save a 1v3 post-plant. While his teammates kept Kryptix pinned, Domagoj “Doma” Fancev defused the spike and closed out Bind 13-10, putting Fnatic 1-0 in the series.

Hoping to tie the series up, ScreaM was going above and beyond for Team Liquid on Ascent.

Despite some good adjustments, Fnatic finished the half on a marginal deficit, 7-5 on the scoreboard.

On the defensive side, a massive team effort from the black and orange made them look nearly unstoppable on the defence. Martin “Magnum” Peňkov was the man of the hour, thwarting two back-to-back Mid to B splits from Team Liquid.

However, a huge clutch from Travis “L1NK” Mendoza tipped the scales back to balance. Tied up at 10-10, Magnum would save Fnatic once again and grant safe passage to 13. A swift 2-0 would put an end to the Masters: Reykjavík EU derby and eliminated Team Liquid out of the tournament.
