Yesterday, we were treated to an exclusive scene for the upcoming Star Wars movie “Rise Of Skywalker”…kinda. This was done as part of the Fortnite x Star Wars event, which has also seen Rey, Finn, Stormtroopers and Sith Troopers added to the world of Fortnite. Kylo Ren is also coming to the game as a skin in the coming days. Moments before the event was due to go live, millions of players were unable to join the game, and many ended up missing the event. I believe it affected a lot of PC players; I managed to view the event on both my PS4 and Switch, but I did have trouble getting into the lobby.
As the event was about to begin, Geoff Keighley announced that they were delaying the event by 10 minutes to allow players to get into the event. They also announced that everyone would be getting “The Whisper” glider whether they attended the event or not, so that was nice.
Eventually, the event began, and we were treated to a scene of the Millennium Falcon taking on an army of Tie Fighters flying around the Fortnite map. Once the Falcon took care of the enemy, it landed in Risky Reels, and we were greeted by a hologram version of Geoff Keighley, a Stormtrooper, and JJ Abrams. After about 5 minutes of chit chat, we were shown an exclusive scene from the upcoming Star Wars movie “Rise Of Skywalker” (watch the video below to see the scene). We also took part in a short Q&A where we collectively answered questions on what we thought the scene would be about and what our favorite lightsaber color is (it’s purple by the way). Then JJ, Geoff, and the Stormtrooper left us and headed back to a galaxy far, far away.
Once they’d left, we were all given a lightsaber, and it was a lightsaber-only Team Rumble match, which was a lot of fun.
Overall, the event was good but let down by technical issues. The exclusive scene wasn’t anything to write home about but still amazing to witness along with the fact JJ and Geoff were communicating with us in real-time. And we now have lightsabers and blasters in the game for the next week or so.
Who would have thought, back in September 2017 when the Battle Royale mode first launched, that we would be watching a scene from Star Wars, having JJ Abrams talk to us in real-time, and have lightsabers in the game? Fortnite continues to push the boundaries with what can be done in video games, and I am so excited to see what the future holds for Fortnite.
