FunPlus Phoenix swept Guild Esports on a 3-0 scoreline to win the first EU Challengers event of the VCT: Stage 2. Even though both teams have already secured a spot at the next stage of the circuit, the EMEA Challengers Finals, FPX will not only secure the top seed but also an extra 5,000€.
The series started on Ascent, a surprise map pick from Guild Esports. The first half promised a close series, with rounds being traded tooth-and-nail. Moving into the second time, FPX lengthened their lead on the back of a pistol round win, eventually sealing the deal 13-9.
After such a hectic first map, things were looking more one-sided as we moved to Icebox, the “perma-ban” of Guild. Having spent the first map on Sage, Pontus ‘Zyppan’ Eek was now free to move to the Duelist role, with the Swedish player spearheading FPX and dropping 33 kills to complete a 13-5 landslide.
Guild had a tough task ahead, being 2-0 down in a Best-of-Five series. With the map pick on their side, they would have a prime chance to stay alive in the series. However, the FunPlus Phoenix dominance would carry on to the third map, with the European-CIS squad leaping to a 10-2 lead by the end of the first time.
Up against the ropes as FPX secured match-point, William ‘draken’ Sundin would go above-and-beyond for Guild and secure five kills. However, a Sage revive would require him to take down one more member.
With 21 hit-points left, Andrey ‘Shao’ Kiprsky only required one bullet to close down the series and conquer the first EU Challengers tournament of the VALORANT Champions Tour: Stage 2.
