Gothic, a cult classic action RPG made by the German studio Piranha Bytes, is being remade by a new studio that THQ Nordic has set up. Alkimia Interactive (it seems they’re actually hiring for several positions, so check them out if you think you got the gaming dev goods), based in Barcelona, Spain, is tackling the challenge.

A playable teaser of the Gothic remake has been available on Steam since December 2019.

THQ Nordic is an Austrian game publisher based in Vienna, Austria. They published Darksiders II, Darksiders III, and Darksiders Genesis, along with a handful of Painkiller shoot-em-ups, and, more importantly, Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom-Rehydrated.

Gothic shoves you into a fantasy world where orcs are killing eve- just EVERYONE. Sounds like Rohan before the Battle of the Hornburg… The protagonist is in prison, a mine surrounded by impenetrable shields, unlike the Rebel base in Empire Strikes Back. Who puts the shield generator OUTSIDE OF THE SHIELD?!

*deep breath*

Okay, I’m calm. The prisoners take over the prison mine and pretty much turn it into their own trading post, and the protagonist has to work his way through various factions and quests and fights in order to not die. I’m excited, this may be the only time I get to stay in prison in a fantasy game. Looking at you, Elder Scrolls.

Are you excited about the Gothic remake? If you played the original, what are some features you hope to stay or don’t stay? Let us know!
