Group A Conclusion of MSI 2021: RNG Scores Perfect 8-0

Updated:

On the 4th day of MSI 2021, Group A finally came to a conclusion. Over the course of 4 days, RNG scored a perfect 8-0 in groups. But let’s be honest: is anybody really surprised?

With VCS representatives Gigabyte Marines out of the picture, RNG had a relatively easy journey in groups. Pitted against the Unicorns of Love (UOL) and Pentanet.GG, many put RNG as the heavy favourites to get the first seed. During the first round robin, RNG went a clean 4-0 heading into the second round robin.

That being said, the second round robin wasn’t as easy. Both UOL and Pentanet.GG put up quite a fight in their third rematch against the LPL representatives. The Unicorns of Love fought toe-to-toe with the powerhouse, capitalizing on mistakes made by the RNG players.

Meanwhile, Pentanet.GG had an impressive match against RNG, thanks to multiple quality plays by their midlaner Chazz. The Oceanic midlaner managed to score a clean first blood against Cryin. Even in the top lane, Biopanther found a solo kill against the feared Xiaohu just before falling to Cryin.

However, despite not-so-clean performances during the third rematches, RNG found their form again. The LPL champions gained enough momentum and concluded their MSI Group A run with a perfect 8-0 record. Xiaohu even returned to the mid-lane for their last match and showed he was still as dominant as ever.

Pentanet.GG comes out as second seed

With RNG locked in as first seed after the first round-robin, it was a fight for the second seed. UOL and Pentanet.GG went 1-1 in the first half, so the second half was anybody’s game. Neither won a game against RNG, meaning every head-to-head between the two was crucial for their MSI run.

UOL went 2-1 against Pentanet.GG, which meant the 4th rematch was do-or-die for the OCE representatives. A UOL win would lock them in as second seed, essentially bringing the conclusion of Group A of MSI 2021. On the other hand, a Pentanet.GG win would mean at least a tie-breaker against the Unicorns of Love.

Thankfully for Pentanet.GG, won the crucial match against UOL, forcing the tiebreaker for the second seed. Moreover, the momentum carried over, and Pentanet.GG secured the second seed with another win over UOL in the tiebreaker.
