With Grand Theft Auto VI being all anyone can think about at the moment, what do we actually know about the title? It has been almost seven years since Grand Theft Auto V graced us with its urban chaos. Regarding the sequel, we know some things, and not a lot of things.
Please Note: There has been a distinct lack of any official information regarding Grand Theft Auto VI from Rockstar, so much of what is discussed below is based on various leaks and theories.
Fans were hoping for an announcement on Grand Theft Auto VI during E3 2020. With it’s cancellation, this announcement, if it is coming, could appear at any moment. This article will be updated as-and-when more information is made available.

Grand Theft Auto VI Could Be Taking Us Back To Vice City
Despite several rumours that Grand Theft Auto VI will be set in London, there is a lot of talk that the game will take place in two locations: Vice City and South America. These rumours have been gaining traction after Redditor JackOLantern1982 made several claims almost a year ago.
Codenamed Project Americas, Grand Theft Auto VI is supposedly going to take place in a period between the 1970s and 1980s. It seems like it might be split between Vice City and an unnamed South American City. There are also reports that suggest that the map size will be the equivalent of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. We’re not sure yet if this is going to be spread across multiple locations or not. Although JackOLantern1982 was originally called out on his post, subsequent leaks have hinted at similar information.
This would also seem likely due to the cultural trends of today’s society and the rotational system Rockstar Games seems to have in its titles’ locations.
Over the last several years, there has been a shift in the American cultural interests which would be perfectly represented by Grand Theft Auto VI being set in a 1980’s Vice City. Television shows such as Stranger Things are a prime example of this, alongside the growing trend of Hollywood remaking popular 80’s films. Leaks also suggest that the title will be heavily inspired by Netflix’s Narcos. Additionally, the growing popularity of 80’s fashion trends and retro-wave music would also support this.
Although speculation, there is a trend in the rotation of locations represented in the Grand Theft Auto series. In the 3D era, Grand Theft Auto III, San Andreas, and Vice City were the first three titles released. Grand Theft Auto IV went back to Liberty City, which featured in Grand Theft Auto III. Then, Grand Theft Auto V expanded on San Andreas’ Los Santos. Although it is hardly long enough to be a confirmed trend, it seems likely alongside rumours that Vice City could feature in the upcoming title.
Will It Have Multiple Protagonists?
This is where leaks are a bit uncertain. Some believe that Grand Theft Auto VI will only have one male protagonist, a drug runner named Ricardo. Others believe there will be both a male and a female protagonist. Having a female protagonist would be a series first, but players have been able to play as female characters through Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online for several years.
The leaks that are gaining more traction seem to suggest that there could be up to four protagonists in Grand Theft Auto VI. A former employee began to add credibility to these leaks with the following information. Walter Wallace, Thomas Branigan, Marcus Burke, and an unnamed IDF soldier are all rumoured protagonists. Walter Wallace instantly makes you think about Walter White, the main character in Breaking Bad, and could hint at his role in the story. Thomas Branigan is reportedly an already-established smuggler, while Marcus Burke is a single father. A lot of people are suggesting that four protagonists would be too many, but it all depends on how it might be handled.
This all might be more likely than it seems at first given that there are also rumours that the game will take place over ten years or more. Not only this, but the locations will change with the times. If rumours are to be believed within this, this would be a vital factor in having a developing economy throughout the game. Older cars would increase in value as time goes on and newer technologies could become available as you continue through the story.
A female character named Kacey has also been talked about by leakers. She would also be a drug smuggler, but it is uncertain if she is a possible playable protagonist or just a main character.
There were passing rumours that San Andreas’ CJ would make an appearance, but this was quickly ruled out. Chris Bellard, voice actor for the character, made clear that he was not involved with the title. This does not rule the character out, obviously, but it seems like a solid enough hint that he won’t appear.
Rumors Suggest That Grand Theft Auto VI Will Have PlayStation Exclusivity
One leaker is claiming that Sony has paid “huge money” to Rockstar Games to secure PlayStation 5 exclusivity. A one-month advancement on content is the most likely way this will play out. This is similar to the situation with Red Dead Redemption 2. With this title, there was a 30-day exclusivity for various content drops added to Red Dead Online.
There is little information available to support this, but it could be likely given the relationship between the two established by Red Dead Redemption 2. Call of Duty Modern Warfare is another title which also featured PlayStation exclusivity regarding it’s Spec Ops feature.
There Are A Lot Of Unsupported Leaks About Minor Features
The leaks above are the rumours which appear to have the most legitimacy due to their support online. There are also a number of unsupported leaks which could seem likely due to their relation with Red Dead Redemption 2.
For example, your car in Grand Theft Auto VI could act as a similar feature to Red Dead’s saddle. The trunk of the car will act as a locker for all your weaponry and equipment. This, though, contradicts rumours that Grand Theft Auto VI will be more arcade-like than the realism presented in Red Dead. Only being able to carry 3 weapons at a time goes against the core of an arcade shooter.
There will also be a health and stamina core system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. Similarly, hand-to-hand combat will be more detailed than Grand Theft Auto V and weapons will handle more realistically. These may be leaks, yet they are also just comments on Rockstar’s advancing game development. Hand-to-hand combat will obviously be better as the standard of games released by Rockstar has improved.
In addition to this, leakers are suggesting that there will be advanced weather mechanics, killable NPCs that change mission outcomes, and improved parkour. There is also allegedly a minigame revolving around urination, where you use motion controls to control the character’s penis. That would be a very Grand Theft Auto thing to do, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Grand Theft Auto VI Likely To Release In 2023
Evidence is mounting to suggest that Grand Theft Auto VI will be hopefully coming out in 2023. This may not be the news people want to hear, ultimately, but evidence to suggest this is arguably more solid than anything else relating to the release date.
Take-Two, Rockstar Games’ parent company, has refused to comment on Grand Theft Auto VI a number of times. Despite this, during a recent earnings call, we learnt that they have over 90 titles planned to release over the next five years. Take-Two President Karl Slatoff has stated that 63 of these titles will be “core-gaming experiences”. Surely Grand Theft Auto VI has to be one of them.
The latest report on Take-Two’s long-term financial plans would suggest that something is coming.
Between April 2023 and March 2024, Take-Two is reportedly going to spend nearly $90 million on marketing. This increase in spending is unlike anything in the company’s history. It is reportedly over twice as much as in any period of a similar length.
An investment analyst, Jeff Cohen, has added credibility to this information, suggesting a 2023 release by adding that Red Dead Redemption 2’s release window was accurately predicted in a similar fashion.
It is worth noting that currently, Take-Two’s only other major franchise with continual success is the NBA 2K series. Being a sport game, titles like this often have a regular release schedule. Usually, this is replicated in advertisement spending. Borderlands 3 was undoubtedly a hit when it released, but a spike of this size in marketing spending would suggest something even bigger than a Borderlands sequel.
Contradicting this, however, is industry analyst Michael Pachter’s suggestion that it may be coming sooner than this. He expects a 2021 announcement followed by a 2022 release to be far more likely than anything sooner. However, with this new financial analysis… It would not be surprising if he now agrees with the 2023 release window. Games do not have to release a year after their announcement. Take Elder Scrolls VI, for example…
It is worth noting that the reasoning behind the spike in spending has not-yet been confirmed, so this is still ultimately speculation. Take-Two have reportedly refuted these speculative comments, stating that this is all due to external parties. This could just be a cover in an effort to preserve any planned release of information.
Even If Grand Theft Auto VI Does Release In 2023, It Might Not Be Complete
The Gaming Community criticized Rockstar heavily during the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. This was due to their practice of crunch culture. What does this mean? Usually, it means developers have to work ridiculous hours to meet release schedules. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier has suggested that the criticism has led to changes regarding the game’s release.
Grand Theft Auto VI could release at a smaller size initially with expansions added post-launch. Schreier has still spoken about how large the game will be, though. This will come as no surprise to anyone. A lot of triple-A titles are 100GB upwards nowadays, if not pushing 200GB. Grand Theft Auto VI will most likely be the same.
So, at any rate, it seems as if Grand Theft Auto VI is a little while away. Will we get any information about the upcoming title this summer? What would you like to see included? Let us know!
