At yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft unveiled 343 Industries’ newest entry into the Halo universe! But are Halo open world games the new norm for the series? They might be! Here’s all we know below.
Halo Infinite was never a secret going into the Xbox Games Showcase, but that doesn’t mean we knew a whole lot about it. Now… Thanks to the gameplay demo they showed at the Showcase and subsequent interviews, we now know a whole lot more.

Halo Open World Does Not Encompass The Whole Game
The big question after seeing the expansive map in the gameplay demo is whether Halo Infinite is an open world game.
In an interview with IGN, 343’s Studio Head Chris Lee expanded on what we saw in the Showcase Demo. Lee has described the section we saw as “delivering on a promise” they made before. And, from what he said below, it seems to be something akin to the level design in Uncharted: Lost Legacy and The Last Of Us Part 2.
“ What you saw in the demo that we showed, you have this map… There’s this huge open section of the ring. As you get to that point in the game, this is several hours into the campaign, then you have the ability to traverse that whole area and explore where you want to go on the ring. That’s what we mean by open and explore the different places that you can go to. “

Halo Infinite Also Includes Day / Night Cycles
An open world raises a whole host of additional options for 343 Industries to explore. What are they bringing to Halo Infinite?
One of the things that might excite fans is that Halo Infinite will have sections of the game that include a full day and night cycle. This, undoubtedly, will be welcome news to fans as fighting under a crimson sunset is always nice to look at! In addition to this, Halo Infinite is bringing a host of new pieces of equipment and abilities to aid with exploration. For example, in the gameplay reveal we saw at the Xbox Games Showcase, we saw Master Chief using a Just Cause-like grappling hook to both traverse the level and retrieve items.
Adding to this, the gameplay reveal showed a host of new weapons to get to grips with alongside some of the series’ staples. However, what makes Halo Infinite really interesting is the setting of this semi-open world area. Halo Infinite is set on a ring world that is reportedly bigger than Halo 4 and Halo 5 combined.
Fans shouldn’t need to wait too long for more information about Halo Infinite. 343 Industries have promised to be sharing more information soon ahead of its Holiday 2020 launch period! Although this game is considered a spiritual reboot of the series, do not expect it to be the last entry.
