At long last… Harry Potter game details have been leaked! A Bloomberg report seems to suggest that this is partially down to developers being “rattled” by the backlash continually faced by J.K. Rowling due to her comments on trans women.
Back in 2018, fans of the wizarding world got a small glimpse at what could have been a Harry Potter game. However, a lot of this footage was taken down fairly quickly. It’s unclear as to whether this was really Warner Bros., but there are references to copyright infringement on any remaining links to the footage. It showed an RPG with character customisation, Hogwarts houses, Potterverse spells and locations from the films. Here’s what I could find below:
Now, though, we have more information. This has come thanks to two anonymous sources from within Warner Bros. Interactive.
Harry Potter Game Details Include Launch Schedule
A number of tweets cite the same information. The Harry Potter game will be an open-world Hogwarts adventure with surrounding areas coming into play. This could mean the Forbidden Forest, or Godric’s Hollow, or somewhere further afield… We don’t know yet. We also know that it is being developed by Avalanche Software, a Salt Lake City-based development company under Warner Bros. Interactive. They are yet to develop a title under Warner Bros. Interactive. However, they developed several Disney-related titles under Disney Interactive Studios. The latest of these is Cars 3: Driven to Win.
More Harry Potter game details should be coming after DC Fandome next month. This might be coming with a release date, but I wouldn’t be so sure. What we we know from leaks, though, is that its scheduled for release late next year. That means it’s a next-gen title.
The other big bit of news which many are finding almost hilarious is that Rowling has “very little direct involvement” in the title. It shouldn’t really need to be a marketing point, but you can see why the distinction has been made. Rowling’s comments have left many attempting to separate the art from the artist, and this is just another step in that direction.
