You’ll need some experience before you can play the ranked queue in League of Legends. To gain access to the ranked queue, your account will need to be level 30, and have at least 20 champions purchased from the store. This is to ensure you have a basic understanding of the game and enough champions to get you through the draft phase.
Champion Select in Ranked
The first difference in a ranked queue is the drafting phase. This is split into the ban and pick phases.
The ban phase is first. Everyone gets one ban which affects both teams. If there’s a champion you know you’ll do poorly against, now’s the time to make sure you don’t have to play against them. There is also a 30 second ‘hover’ phase which will let you show your team what champion you want to play, so they won’t accidentally ban you out. Just remember the enemy team could ban the champion you wanted to play, so always have a backup.
Some website such as op.gg will allow you to scout out your opponents and see which champions they are best at.
Ranks and Divisions
There are nine ranks that can achieve in the ranked queue. There are:
Iron to Diamond are separated into four divisions. Division four is the lowest, and division one is the highest. The highest three ranks have only one division.
To find get your rank, you’ll play 10 placement matches. During these placement matches, you’ll be given a provisional rank so you can see what level you’re playing at.
On completion of placement matches, you’ll get your rank and division. Now you can start climbing the ranked queue.
Each division is separated into 100 Ladder Points (LP). After accumulating 100 LP in a division, you enter a promotional series. Winning the next two games out of three, will result in a promotion to the next division.
If you’re in the first division of the rank e.g. Gold 1, and you have 100 LP, you’ll be able to play a promotion series to get to the next rank (in this case Platinum). Winning the next three of five games will promote you to the next rank.
You will gain LP if you win a game and lose LP if you don’t. LP gains and loses are determined by how well you did in each game.
