You need Hide to survive and thrive in ARK’s world. However, as with some of the game’s other central mechanics it isn’t always clear how to get Hide in ARK, much less how to make the process easier and more efficient.

In this guide, we’ll run you through how to get Hide in ARK. Some of the most useful items you can craft are made with material, meaning you’ll need a lot of it. Fortunately, there are two methods to get Hide more efficiently.

How to Get Hide in ARK

Getting Hide in ARK is a pretty simple task, but many players face the issue of not having enough of it. To get the resource, all you must do is kill any creature that isn’t a fish or invertebrate.

Right after you kill that creature, you can then acquire the hide that it was wearing, which is pretty easy, right? Well, it’s nothing is ever quite that simple.

Acquiring hide is easy, but most items require a lot of it. Obtaining the resource in bulk is a little more challenging, and since you need Hide to craft the items you require to survive, this is less-than-ideal.

Best Tools to Get Hide in ARK

For those just starting ARK, you presumably own just a few tools – with the Stone Hatchet likely to be one of them. Fortunately, you can use your hatchet to get Hide, while also using it to acquire other resources.

A Stone Hatchet, while decent, is nowhere near as efficient as it could be. As soon as you reach Level 20 and have enough materials, you should craft a Metal Hatchet. For those who own the base game, the Metal Hatchet is the best tool you can use, as it not only allows you to obtain more hide from any creature but also harvests more of any resource that comes from a renewable source.

However, for those who own ARK’s “Scorched Earth” DLC, the best tool you can use is not the metal hatchet but, instead, the Chainsaw, which is even more efficient. To acquire a Chainsaw, you can either craft one, or find a yellow drop that contains the item.

Best Creatures to Farm Hide

Your tools are efficient and effective, allowing you to obtain Hide with relative ease. But, past a certain point, acquiring it with your tools becomes tedious and annoying.

For a more efficient, and far easier, experience, you’ll need to tame the right creatures. The five best creatures for getting Hide are as follows:

  • Thylacoleo
  • Therizonosaur
  • Sabertooth
  • Direwolf
  • Allosaurus

Each one of these creatures will fight with you, side-by-side, during combat situations. Right after the combat situation ends, you can command your tamed creature to harvest the hide of the creature that was just defeated.

Alternatively, you can command your creatures to wander across the map and eliminate any enemy creatures they encounter. This way, they can harvest those creatures’ Hides and bring them back to you.

What to Do With Hide

Out of all the resources found in ARK, Hide is easily one of the most flexible, and can be used to craft a slew of items. Below is the full list of crafting opportunities:

  • Metal Hatchet
  • Hide Sleeping Bag
  • Slingshot
  • Platform Saddles
  • Cloth Gloves
  • Hide Armor
  • Fur Armor
  • Grenades
  • Improvised Explosive Devices
  • Pike
  • Water Jar
  • Waterskin
  • Flak Armor
  • Scuba Gear
  • Smithy
  • Camera
  • Blood Extraction Syringe
  • Gasoline
  • Grenade
  • Sword
  • Shotgun

And that’s all you need to know on how to get Hide in ARK – which makes it easier for you to survive, and thrive, in the harsh world.
