How to Get Squadron Points in War Thunder

Published:

War Thunder barely needs an introduction. In 2013, while the game was still in beta, it won several awards at Gamescon. There are tons of vehicles and mechanics for you to explore and one of them is aquadron points. In this guide, we’ll talk you through what squadron points are and how to get them.

What is a Squadron in War Thunder?

A squadron is a group of players united under one banner or tag. The concept is comparable to clans or guilds in other games. The underlying principle of a squadron is that it allows cooperative gameplay.

Squadron tags show up next to a player’s in-game name and, as such, allow them to coordinate tasks against other squadrons. War Thunder opens up fresher and more exciting game modes for squadrons, such as squadron battles and World War Mode.

How Do You Create or Join a Squadron?

There are two tiers of squadrons in War Thunder. The first tier requires you to have 1,000,000 Silver Lions (SL) and the second one requires 2,500 Golden Eagles (GE).

With the first tier, you are only allowed to create a training squadron. This is the minimal tier and restricts the member count as well as some of the squadron features available in-game.

A squadron created via the second tier allows for a maximum member count of up to 128 players. It also allows all squadron members to access the full set of features offered in a squadron. As such, it is the premium option that is available outside of just the training bits of the game.

Here are the steps to create a squadron in either one of the tiers:

  1. Choose a squadron name, in-game squadron tag, and the character borders that surround it.
  2. Select the squadron’s region.
  3. Add a description of your squadron so that players know what to expect from the squadron. This will help make it easier to find like-minded players.
  4. Put your squadron on the game’s squadron list so that players looking for a squadron know of your opening.

Squadrons have a hierarchy. The Commander is placed highest on the list and the Privates and Sergeants make up the lowest ranks.

What are Squadron Points in War Thunder?

Squadron points can be most simply explained as a third kind of currency available to players in War Thunder. While the other two currencies – Silver Lions and Golden Eagles – are both available to purchase, the squadron research points can only be obtained through in-game missions once you have joined a squadron.

Accrued squadron points are primarily used to unlock squadron vehicles. Squadron vehicles are special in-game vehicles that are only attainable otherwise via Golden Eagles, i.e. by spending cash. Or in this case, you can get them by using earned squadron points.

There are two key components to getting squadron points. One is to find a squadron consisting of active players. The other is to simply play as much as possible. Complete the game’s various challenges and battles to earn research points, turn those into activity points, and then use squadron points to research your desired vehicles.

A key point to remember is that squadron points are directly dependent on players’ regularity in the game. This is measured through a metric called activity points, on the basis of which each squadron member’s final squadron points allocation is calculated.

Activity points are key to this calculation. For every 200 research points that are obtained in the game, a player is awarded one activity point. Each member’s activity point, when added up, gives you the squad’s total activity. That is calculated in a three-day cycle with a cap of 360 activity points.

How to Calculate Squadron Points

The formula is: Number of Members * Activity points of the squadron = Squadron points (Capped at 20,000)

If a squadron has 128 members (the maximum allowed), the maximum obtainable squadron points are 128*360 = 46,080 points every three days. This, however, is capped at 20,000 points. So, depending on your squadron size, you can get anywhere between 0 and 20,000 squadron points in War Thunder every three days.

As a member of this squadron, if your activity in every cycle is equal to or greater than 43%, you will receive the full 20,000 squadron points. If not, you will receive proportionately fewer squadron points based on your activity’s ratio to the team’s activity.

Ways to Maximize Your Squadron Points

Not every squadron will have 128 members as in the example above. So make sure you keep a close eye on your squadron activity and ramp up your own activity accordingly. Also important while looking for a squadron to join is to make sure it has high occupancy and sufficient activity.

The lower the overall squadron activity, the easier it is for you to contribute and gain the maximum possible squadron points.

If you’re a squadron creator, it helps to keep an eye on low-activity members and remove them if needed. Because in the end, being active is all that matters to get squadron points in War Thunder.

To be a good contributor you will need to fly like an ace. Here are a few guides to help you with that:
