Making a fire or fireplace kit in Day Z is as important in-game as it is in real life, and it’s essentially a crucial part to DayZ’s realistic gameplay. A fire allows players to keep warm and avoid catching any illnesses. You can also cook food using a fire, and it provides a natural light source to use when it gets dark.
However, learning how to make one requires some crafting and a few crafting items. Luckily the list of items needed isn’t very long. You can choose different variations if you don’t have specific ones on hand.
To craft a fire, you will need
- A fuel source like sticks or firewood
- Something to be used as a kindling item such as rags, bark, bandages, paper, or even a book.
Once you have all the items you need, go to your inventory and combine your sticks with your starter. For example, combine your sticks with your bark or rags. Once you do, you will have the fireplace kit and you will be ready to place it down.

How to Use the Fire Kit in DayZ
Once you have crafted the fireplace kit, hold it in your hand and scroll until you see the “craft fireplace” option appear. Then simply hold down the left click until it is placed.
To light the fire, you can use matches, a Road Flare, or a Lighter which can be found in the game. Then walk over to your placed fire kit and select the ignite option to light it.
If you don’t have any of these items, you can craft a hand drill kit to light the fire. To craft the hand drill, collect some sticks and bark, which can be collected from trees with a knife. Combine the sticks with the bark to craft the hand drill and use it to ignite your fire.
The last step is to feed your fire by going over to your fire and from the menu, add firewood or small sticks to the fuel section for the fireplace and it will last as long as you keep it fed.
If your fire goes out, you can simply add more kindling to it and when approached, hit the option to reignite the fire. If you want to put it out, just use a flask of water and use the option to put out the fire.
