How to Play the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Alpha

The September PlayStation 5 showcase released a lot of info on games coming to the console, but everything was overshadowed by price and release date reveal, with the subsequent mess of preorders coming right after that. In the showcase, details for the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War alpha were released, with players being able to test out the newest installment this weekend. Granted, there are some catches.

How to Download

If you have a PlayStation 4, you can play the alpha this weekend. You can even preload the game today. Here are the start times for Friday, September 18 which will also be the closing times on Sunday, September 20.

  • UK: 4pm (BST)
  • Europe: 5pm (CEST)
  • East Coast US: 11am (EDT)

You can begin pre-loading your game at those times today, Thursday, September 17. The download is 25 GB(!). Once you clear the 25 GB, you can download the game from the PlayStation store.

You do not need to preorder the game to get access to the Black Ops Cold War alpha. In fact, you don’t even need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play. Sadly, if you do not have a PS4 and wish to test out the new Call of Duty on your PC or Xbox, you are out of luck.

Other consoles/PC will be able to test the game out in Beta, which requires a preorder of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

What Can You Do in the Cold War Alpha?

This will be a multiplayer-heavy alpha. You will be able to play 6v6 modes like domination, there are multiple maps to be played, and you can test out the create-a-class and the newest scorestreaks.

This will be the only opportunity to play the game until the beta in October.
