Unlocking characters in Across the Obelisk can be a bit of a puzzle and a large time investment. Luckily, with knowledge and planning, you can speed up this process. This guide will show you how to unlock every character in Across the Obelisk!

Accessing the Quest You Want

There are a couple of rules for unlocking characters:

  • You must be playing in adventure mode, challenge mode and weekly mode do not unlock new characters for use.
  • When playing with friends, no one can be playing the character you want to unlock.

That being said, you play the game like you normally would, except you prioritize the pathway which contains your character’s pickup quest,

Where to Find the Characters You Want

Across the Obelisk has four acts per play-through. You start in The Kingdom of Senenthia. Upon defeating the boss in Senenthia, you can choose three different locations to enter. A red portal, a green portal, and a blue portal, each taking you to either Velkarath, Aquarfall Marsh, or Faeborg Forest, respectively.

Once you have defeated Senenthia and two of the portals, you will enter the final act, the Void.

Keeping this in mind, each character you can unlock makes its home in a different part of the world. Also, most characters require that you travel to another realm to finish their quest. I will include below a list of where your character’s quest can be obtained and where it concludes:

Ottis (Healer)SenenthiaSenenthiaTake the quest at the Isolated Chapel in Act 1 and then travel north to the Bandit Camp and defeat Yogger.
Bree (Warrior)Blue PortalVoidEnter the Blue Portal after defeating Act 1, and travel to Bree’s Grove in the north of the map. Complete Act 4 up to the Dawn and Dusk event and then travel the top path to the Garden Node and turn in the quest by planting Ylmer’s Seed.

Important to note: If the Lost Sheep event spawns in Act 1, this can stop you from obtaining the event on Main Road. If this happens, just restart a new run and hope RNG is with you.
Nezglekt (Healer)SenenthiaVoidTo unlock Nezglekt you must visit the Stargazer at the Riverside Camp in Act 1, and choose to accept a divination option. Once you do, travel to the Red Portal and head to the campsite node. Nezglekt will ask you to carry a large box that reduces a character’s speed by 3 until Act 4. Travel to Nezglekt’s airship in Act 4 and give him the box.
Important to note: If the Riverside Green event spawns, this can stop you from accessing the required pre-requisite quest in Act 1. Restart the run and try again.
Thuls (Scout)SenenthiaGreen PortalTake his quest from the Water Mill in Act 1 and then go to the Green Portal. Enter the Spider Lair and finish the area to unlock Thuls

After obtaining his quest, travel to the Blue Portal and access the Mansion location. Choose the left wing and you have successfully unlocked Gustav.

With this knowledge in mind, and proper planning you can manage to unlock multiple characters per run making this process much faster.

How to Speed Up the Process Further

It’s important to note that unlocking characters becomes easier the more you play the game and accrue more perk points. Completing runs nets you leftover crystals and gold at the start of your next run. You can claim them in the starter city of the new run as shown below.

Your team composition, your build choice, and their synergy mean everything to have the smoothest and strongest run you can. You’ll also want to get a strong pet that matches what your build is aimed at doing as a good pet is basically a free card used every turn.
