The Quarter-Finals of IEM Beijing Europe 2020 kicked off with two 2-0 series, as Nikola ‘NiKo’ Kovač took down his former team and Natus Vincere overpowered a confused Astralis. G2 and Na’Vi will be the first two teams to advance to the Semi-Finals, as we will have to wait until tomorrow to know who will join them.
The first derby of the day, featuring G2 Esports v FaZe Clan started over at Dust 2. A stellar first half from Håvard ‘rain’ Nygaard, with the Norwegian putting 26 kills on the board, gave FaZe Clan a strong five round advantage.
In spite of that, rain would cool off once the team switched over to the offensive side of the map, with the Kovač cousins rising up to the opportunity and carrying G2 all the way to overtime.
FaZe Clan would be unable to comeback into the match post-regulation, with the first map going the way of G2 Esports, 19-17.
Over at the map pick of FaZe, Mirage, it was time for the AWP of Kenny ‘KennyS’ Schrub to punish FaZe for their lack of offensive solutions. Leading by a minimal margin of three rounds at the end of the first half, G2 would proceed to stampede over the defensive side of FaZe, closing out the map 16-8 and taking the series in a clean 2-0 sweep.
Natus Vincere would pick Overpass to start off the series against Astralis. A surprising gamble, given the 80% win rate of the Danes on the map compared to the 45% of the CIS roster, but sure enough, Na’Vi would show some good signs by the end of the first half, despite the shaky start.
Switching over to the defensive side, a trifecta of Ilya ‘Perfecto’ Zalutskiy, Aleksandr ‘s1mple’ Kostyliev and Denis ‘electronic’ Sharipov powered through the Danes, bleeding two rounds before they seized the map 16-9, securing series-point.
Astralis only lost three maps at IEM Beijing
Astralis was looking to find security in the T side of their own map pick, hoping to continue their Inferno win-streak alive.
And even though the Danish roster couldn’t land their punches at the start of the map, failing time and time again to convert on their man advantages, they managed to close out the last five rounds of the half, shortening the distance to a one round deficit.
But Natus Vincere would show no mercy on the second half, as a crushing offensive demolished any hopes of Astralis prolonging their run at IEM Beijing. A decisive 16-9 score would send them packing and put Natus Vincere in the Semi-Finals.
