IEM Summer 2021 Day 3 concluded the lower bracket for group A and 3 more teams were eliminated from the event.
Group A Lower Bracket Finals
The Juggernauts in Complexity took on the world’s best in Gambit in a thriller of a match. Where the international squad has been struggling to perform at the top level, Gambit has been dominant throughout 2021. So coming into the match most expected it to be a quick and easy series for the CIS giants.
The game started off on coL’s pick of Mirage where they started strong by picking up the pistol round and winning the following anti-eco. Gambit responded by winning the first gun round and set themselves up for a strong half by winning 8 out of the first 11 rounds. coL managed to keep the half competitive by closing it out at 9-6. The second half was however a blowout as Ax1le and sh1ro continued their strong performance and quickly closed the map out 16-7. The game continued onto Overpass, which has been Gambit’s best map for a long time. This time however the team failed to show up individually and everyone except RUSH outperformed Gambit’s players which led to a dominant 16-8 victory for the Juggernaut.
The decider for the series was Vertigo where Gambit started on the T side and took the first 4 rounds in a row winning both the anti-eco and the first gun round. This was followed up by a couple of back and forth rounds between the two teams till coL took a slew of rounds into their tally. Gambit closed out the half with a 9-6 lead as sh1ro and Ax1le were back in the game. In the second half blameF’s troops again lost the first 2 but this time they went on a streak of 6 rounds but were unable to stop Gambit from closing the game out, barely losing it 16-14, and got eliminated from the event.
This event has been a good showing from the international squad and taking a map off of Gambit is a big achievement that they should be able to build up from.
Group B Lower Semi-Finals
Over in group B, NIP faced off versus Heroic, setting up a rematch from Flashpoint 3’s lower bracket. The game started off on NIP’s pick of Mirage where Heroic started off strong winning the first 6 rounds in a row before the Ninjas were able to respond. Heroic only let NIP win 4 rounds in the half and won the half in dominant fashion with an 11-4 lead off the back of strong performances from stavn and Refrezh. They continued on in the second half winning the first two but then the Ninjas responded with a massive 9 round streak tieing the game at 13-13. The teams traded the final rounds of the game with Heroic reaching map point first but failing to close the game as the Swedes took it to overtime and closed out the match 19-17.
The second map of the game was Nuke where the Danes had secured victory in their last bout versus the Ninjas. This time however hampus read them like a book, constantly countering any outside plays Heroic tried to make. Device too performed well and together they gave Heroic no way into the first half winning 7 out of the first 9 rounds and closing the half out with a 9-6 lead. The second half was even more dominant as THREAT’s troops gave away just 1 round before closing the game out 16-7 and eliminating Heroic from the event.
The other game of Group B was a CIS clash between Team Spirit and Virtus.Pro. Spirit started off the game on their pick of Dust2 where they quickly picked up the first half 9-6. In the second half VP put up more of a fight winning 5 rounds but Spirit was able to close it out 16-11 off the back of strong mir and degster performances.
The second map of the series was Inferno where Yekindar got back to his strong entry fragging form and carried VP’s T side to a landslide first half closing it out 12-3. Spirit’s T side in the second half looked strong but they couldn’t recover from their first-half deficit and VP managed to secure the 3rd map with a 16-9 scoreline. The decider for the series was Ancient where the two teams mirrored each other both in individual performances and rounds. Both teams won their CT halves 10-5 and Qikert and mir put up big numbers for their teams. The map went to OT where VP pulled ahead, clinching the series 2-1 and eliminating Spirit from the event.
