This is a series about indie games in development that you may not have heard of, but should know about.
Week #1 – Zealot by Primecut Games
‘Zealot is a top down action / adventure game where the player takes charge of a fallen priest, the sole survivor of a long ruined Orthodox colony who awakens to a holy mission, to cleanse the heretical Paganism plaguing the land and renew the one true faith. ‘
Zealot looks like an indie love child between Blasphemous and Diablo. You’re a… wait for it… zealot who runs around and smashes heretics with a big assumedly blessed mace, all while sporting a beard that would make Gimli jealous. In my opinion it shows immense promise, especially for an indie studio.
See what I mean about the beard? I digress…while jealously stroking my own beard in a newfounded self consciousness. The character art is phenomenal, and the best part is it’s probably only going to get better as development continues. The rolling animation is just as expertly done, and I know that from personal experience; I’ve rolled in real life once.
In this second gif, we see Mr. McBetterbeard dodge an attack from a bomb lobbing baddy, showing that the game might be, and I hesitate to use this term, a ‘souls-like’ with challenging combat that will require attention and skill to overcome. That alone makes me personally interested, even if I suck at souls-likes. The OST track they provide further shows that it’s heavily inspired by Dark Souls, with the choral singing in the background and dark theme.
The one thing that could cause some hesitation about the game is their development log. They frequently updated it until October 24th, 2019, but not since then. They have posted to r/indiegaming recently, which is where I ran across them, so they aren’t inactive or defunct, but an updated development log would be a welcomed thing.
I am personally looking forward to Zealot very much, and I hope to hear more from Primecut Games in the future. For more information, check out Primecut Games’ website here.
