Indie developer, Malcs, has partnered up with Jagex to publish its idle game, Melvor Idle. The game is a feature-rich idle game inspired by RuneScape. The news originally came from the developer’s Reddit post.
Brendan Malcolm, the sole developer of Melvor Idle, created the game with the intent of bringing the idle (afk) components of what makes RuneScape enjoyable in a new way.
Malcolm, a RuneScape fan, based the game on the MMORPG. Jagex themselves became aware of the project back in 2020 and a lot of their staff became fans of it when it launched on Steam during October 2020.
Jagex is a company I have looked up to since I was incredibly young. They have created an amazing product that continues to expand today, even after all these years. For them to partner up with me to bring Melvor Idle into the spotlight is something I could only dream of.
Jagex has quite a history of controversies, from the monetization of RuneScape to its buggy releases. However, Malcolm has stated that he will still remain complete creative control over Melvor Idle, and he has no plans to monetize the game; it will remain a single-purchase title while he is in control.
Though, his statements did little to quell the concerns, as many of the Reddit comments seem to have negative sentiments towards the partnership. Only time will tell if things will remain the same for the game and its player base.
