[Breaking] Jin Air Green Wings League of Legends Team Disbands

Updated:

On November 17, Jin Air Green Wings announced that their League of Legends team will be disbanding. The team wasn’t selected among the teams for the franchising next year, thus will not be playing in the LCK in 2021.

Jin Air Green Wings’ Golden Age

Jin Air Green Wings appeared for the first time in the Korean scene back in 2013. In the early days of OGN, the organization had two teams: JAG Falcons & JAG Stealths respectively. Despite some good results, they never qualified for Worlds.
When the OGN rules forced the two teams to merge, the team almost made it to Worlds, only to fall short to KT Rolster, who beat Jin Air during the Regional Finals.
Throughout the years, the organization became known to discover & nurture many talents. Players like Lee “GBM” Chang-seok , Kang “Cpt Jack” Hyung-woo & most notably Park “Teddy” Jin-seong, had all played for Jin Air. Many other players currently playing in the LCK have also played for the team.

The Decline

Despite the decent success, their performance started to decline in 2018, as they were almost on the brink of relegation multiple times. After losing Teddy, who joined SKT, the team lost their core player.
In 2019, the team was only able to win one series throughout the two regular splits. They made the miserable record of being the first team in LCK history to achieve a 0-18 match score during the Summer Split.
Fans were really heartbroken, as they wanted to see a redemption story from the organization. The team had a particular supportive fan base, especially after the “sadplane”, a depiction of Jin Air during its losing streak, became popular on social media.

After dropping in CK for the 2020 spring, they only ended in 7th place. However, in summer, they almost made it back by reaching playoffs finals only to lose at the very end.

The team stated that they weren’t able to be selected as one of the teams in the LCK franchise model for 2021. Thus, Jin Air Green Wings will be parting ways with the coaches and players and will be shutting down the team’s operations.
Jin Air Green Wings might no longer be with us, but the ‘plane’ will fly in our hearts for a long time.
