League of Legends: What is Blue Essence?

As soon as you launch League of Legends for the first time you will see that things work a bit differently there rather in, for example, Dota 2. And one of the very first things you will get familiar with is in-game currencies: RP and Blue Essence (BE). While RP is used to buy cosmetics, Blue Essence plays a bit more crucial role in League.

What is Blue Essence used for?

In League of Legends, Blue Essence’s primary usage is buying new characters. The game has dozens of them but only some will be available to you from the start. Character’s prices also vary. The cheapest ones are 450 BE, the most expensive ones are 7800 BE, and yes it is quite a lot.

You will also have to use some of Blue Essence to transform Champion Shards into playable characters.

Champion Shards can be acquired via “Awakening Missions” or from Hextech Chests. The Shard allows you to get a pre-determined character for a discounted price. Or if you don’t want that character, you can convert the Shard to Blue Essence and spend it on a Champion you want.

Other less important uses of Blue Essence are:

  • Purchasing mystery champion shards.
  • Purchasing rune pages.
  • Upgrading champion mastery to level 6 or 7.
  • Purchasing chromas when they’re on sale.
  • Purchasing econtent in the Essence Emporium.

How to acquire Blue Essence?

As a beginner player, you will revive lots of Blue Essence with the help of introductory missions. Those introductory missions are: “Awakening Missions”, Daily Play Rewards, and Level Up rewards.

“Awakening Missions” is a list of 8 simple quests, like get a total of 30 assists. Most of them will be completed without you even noticing but those missions have really tasty rewards.

The First 7 days of playing will allow you to collect Daily Play Rewards. Those include Hextech chests, Champions, and Blue Essence. And don’t worry, you don’t have to log in and play for 7 days straight, whenever you can.

Level Up rewards are the main source of Blue Essence though. After you completed everything else, leveling up your account will become the only source of BE in League of Legends.

After reaching a new level, you will get either a Champion Shard or a certain amount of Blue Essence. And yes, levels require more and more XP/playtime to reach.

You can also get more Blue Essence by participating in events that happen in League. The most common event is an esports tournament. League of Legends will reward you for watching one or more matches on the official League of Legends esports website even if you just leave the tab on mute.
