Leveling Up in Marvel’s Avengers to Become More Difficult

Hawkeye and Maestro in Marvel's Avengers

In a blog post released on Thursday, Crystal Dynamics announced that the upcoming March 18th update for Marvel’s Avengers will make leveling up more difficult. New players will need more XP to level up their heroes once they hit level 25, making the leveling process from levels 25 to 50 more grindy.

The change comes from a desire from the developer to make the game more balanced and fair throughout the experience. Crystal Dynamics wants to make the game more well-rounded for late-game play.

The developer details the system changes in a blog post titled “Upcoming Cosmetic and XP Rework.” Regarding the leveling overhaul, they wrote

…[W]e’ll be increasing the amount of XP needed to level up, starting from around level 25. This amount will increase the closer you get to level 50 so that it will take longer to reach higher levels, and will only affect character level, not power level. If you already have level 50 characters, which is the current maximum, this won’t affect you. If you have a character who isn’t level 50 and want to speed up their progress, take this time to do so before the update on March 18.

They said that the current leveling system, as opposed to most RPGs, was straight line progression. Conversely, other systems in games have a curve for the higher a player gets. This is all in order to make players hooked on the endgame longer.

The short version of all this is that players leveled up their characters to the max level too quickly. That potentially led to them dropping the game not too long after initially picking it up.

The blog post detailed other changes to how cosmetics work, mainly making it so that, instead of cosmetics being random drops in-game, they can be purchasable through vendors and in-game currency.

Many speculate that the change, while being phrased as a positive, marks the beginning of the game moving from being paid to becoming free-to-play. By making it more grindy, players will have a longer time leveling up, which will hopefully mean player numbers will stay more consistent.

The March 18th update for Marvel’s Avengers is set to be a major one. XP changes aside, the update will also introduce Hawkeye as a playable character and the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S enhanced versions of the game. Hopefully, making leveling up in Marvel’s Avengers more difficult will be able to revive the dwindling player numbers the game has faced since the game’s launch last September.
