It’s been a little more than a hot minute since the LOTR: Gollum game was announced. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Middle-Earth adventure!
March 2019 saw the introduction of the LOTR: Gollum game to the world. It’s a game no one really asked for, certainly not one I asked for (give me a new LOTR: Conquest any day!) However, it is a game we’re getting. It’s an action-adventure game that will most likely carry a lot of stealth gameplay. I’m thinking it may play out like the Styx games…
But here’s everything we actually know about it so far:

LOTR: Gollum Game Being Developed By Daedelic, Not WB Games
Alright, so… This may come as a surprise, given the popularity of Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. However, WB Games is in a little bit of a limbo state at the moment. You may have seen in our previous article: WB Games is up for sale! It appears that AT&T’s enormous debt is one of the reasons that the company has decided to attempt to offload the WB Games Division of WB Interactive.
It Should Be Out Next Year
All we know at this stage is that it’s confirmed to be a next-gen release for 2021. So it’s something, but not a lot. I would expect that this will be ironed out a little more in the future, but it may even have been delayed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
LOTR: Gollum Game Set Before The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter a little while ago, Daedlic discussed the time-frame of the game in Middle Earth. It turns out that LOTR: Gollum will take place in the years after Gollum acquires The One Ring. Remember that strange montage scene where we see Andy Serkis slowly morph into the large-eyed goblin-creature we know and love? Yeah, well it’s sometime after that but before The Hobbit. I hope, anyway. I don’t want to see that strange creature ever again.
All we know about the physical locations of LOTR: Gollum so far is that it’ll start in Barad-Dur. Barad-Dur is a fortress in Mordor. Well, it’s the biggest fortress in Mordor. It’s Sauron’s primary stronghold and one of the infamous towers mentioned in Two Towers. There will be other environments to explore, though, so hopefully we won’t be in Sauron’s shadow for the whole game!
Gollum Isn’t Going To Have A Lot Of Skills
According to the Edge preview of LOTR: Gollum in January, the game will mainly focus on platforming and subterfuge. This, as opposed to traditional action-adventure gameplay which features… Well, more action.
However, if this doesn’t already interest you, there will also be a fairly significant focus on the inner battles Gollum faces. His conflict with Smeagol will bring added in-game decisions and further expand the avenues of play. Hopefully.
This Gollum Will Be A Unique Take On The Character
Rather than emulate the ever-popular Andy Serkis portrayal, Daedlic are aiming to bring their own take on Gollum to the table. Kai Fiebig, a Producer at Daedlic, has spoken about how they “started with the person he was and then evolved him”. Allegedly, the style of the game will skirt along the Uncanny Valley. It will aim to give fans a bold stylistic representation as opposed to an attempt at true realism.
Saying this, LOTR: Gollum won’t be completely full of mythical beasts and odd creatures. It’s been reported that a number of Nazgul and Thranduil will both feature in the game to some degree. Thranduil is portrayed by Lee Pace in The Hobbit trilogy (Legolas’ dad).
