It has been about a decade since Minecraft first launched, breaking the mold for what indie games can be. Later on, Mojang, now named Mojang Studios, was acquired by Microsoft for a staggering $2.5 billion. Now the game has sold 200 million copies, almost doubling the sales of the runner up, GTA V, which has sold 120 million copies. GTA V still remains the most profitable entertainment product of all time, grossing over $6 billion worldwide.
Despite its age, Minecraft has remained one of the most played games in the world, with 126 million people playing it each month. It is likely due to the vast appeal the game has; from small children to adults, there is entertainment to be found.
Minecraft did get overshadowed by Fortnite throughout 2018 and 2019 but made a huge comeback in popularity over recent months, especially on YouTube and Twitch, but it was still played by millions every day, anyway.
