Monster Hunter Rise: How to Reload Gunlance

Updated:

The Gunlance boasts a strong shield and powerful attacks in the form of shellings and other explosive attacks. Shelling and Wyrmstake Cannons require reloading while the Wyvern’s Fire has a cooldown timer for when it can be used. Here are the ways on how to reload the Gunlance in Monster Hunter Rise.

How to Regular Reload Gunlance in Monster Hunter Rise

Pressing ZR + A while not performing any combos will reload both the shellings and Wyrmstake Cannon, as per standard for the weapon in past games. You are vulnerable while doing this, so get used to the timing of how long it takes to reload this way and make sure you won’t get hit while reloading.

How to Quick Reload Gunlance in Monster Hunter Rise

After performing almost any attack in your moveset, pressing ZR + A while allow you to perform a Quick Reload, which (as the name suggests) has faster reloading animation, allowing you to get right back into your combo. Since this is done right after an attack, you can chain Overhead Smash, Burst Fire, and Quick Reload together.

While this does reload all of your shellings, this does not reload your Wyrmstake Cannon, so you can’t fit it into your combo as easily. However, there is a Switch Skill that allows you to replace Quick Reload for Guard Reload, which also reloads the Wyrmstake Cannon.

How to do Guard Reload Gunlance in Monster Hunter Rise

Once you’ve unlocked the third set of Switch Skills for the Gunlance, you can choose to swap out Quick Reload for Guard Reload. This is a fast reload, like Quick Reload, reloads the Wyrmstake Cannon, and also acts like a guard, as the name implies. This means you will be protected during the reloading animation.

The downside to this, however, is that it will only reload 3 shells instead of all of them. This will only significantly affect Gunlances that have higher number of shells available to it, particularly those with Normal Type shellings.

Since Long and Wide Type shellings have a maximum capacity of 3 and 2 respectively (without any skills to boost it), they won’t be affected by the reduced amount of reloads from the Guard Reload skill, making them perfect for the Guard Reload Switch Skill.

Bonus – Hail Cutter Also Quick Reloads the Gunlance

There is one more way of reloading the Gunlance, and that is through the Hail Cutter Silkbind Attack. Assuming you haven’t swapped it out for Ground Splitter, you can press ZL + X to perform the Hail Cutter.

This will swing your Gunlance and launch your hunter into the air, performing a Quick Reload (reloading all your shellings) before slamming down with an Overhead Smash, setting you up perfectly for a Burst Fire.

Hail Cutter also has the added benefit of reducing the remaining cooldown on your Wyvern’s Fire when you land. This is the only way to actively speed up its down time.

Your playstyle will rely on what type of shelling your Gunlance uses, so it pays to keep in mind what Switch Skills you should equip for the type of Gunlance you are using.
