Monster Hunter Rise: How to Unlock Switch Skills

Updated:

Monster Hunter Rise brings in many of the combat changes introduced in Monster Hunter World, while also adding some of its own new mechanics. One of these is a new feature called “Switch Skills,” which allow you to swap select moves from the weapon’s moveset with an alternative one. Here is how to unlock Switch Skills in Monster Hunter Rise.

Monster Hunter Rise – Switch Skills

Each weapon has 3 different Switch Skills, and each one has a set of 2 different attacks that you can choose from. Unlocking each one has different requirements.

Requirement
First Switch SkillsUnlock 3 star Village Quests or 2 star Hub Quests, then talk to Master Utsushi
Second Switch SkillsCraft or upgrade enough unique weapons of the same type.
Third Switch SkillsComplete a set of quests in 4 star, 5 star, and 5 star Hub Quests. Each weapon has 1 quest to unlock its 3rd Switch Skill

For every weapon, there is a Switch Skill for 2 of its regular abilities, and one Switch Skill for one of its Silkbind Attacks.

How to unlock the first set of switch skills

The first set of Switch Skills is pretty straightforward. As your progress through Village or Hub Quests, you’ll eventually unlock the first set of Switch Skills after talking to Master Utsushi when you reach 3 star Village or 2 star Hub Quests.

The first set of Switch Skills is unavoidable if you’re progressing through the game normally, so you don’t necessarily need to worry about this too much.

How to unlock the second set of switch skills

The second set of Switch Skills is not so obvious to unlock. Simply put, you’ll need to craft or upgrade enough weapons of the same type before Master Utsushi gives you the second Switch Skill for that weapon.

For instance, you’ll need to craft around five or more unique dual blades before unlocking the second set of Switch Skills. “Unique” simply means a having a different name. It is unknown how many exactly you need to craft, but it seems like higher rarity weapons contribute more to this hidden list than lower rarity weapons.

How to unlock the third set of switch skills

Lastly, to unlock the last set of Switch Skills is also done on a per-weapon basis. There are a set of quests each for 4 star, 5 star, and 6 star Hub Quests, meaning you will need to reach high rank. Completing each quest will unlock the third Switch Skill for a weapon.

So, for instance, in 4 star Hub Quest, you unlock the quests for Sword and Shield, Hunting Horn, Switch Axe, and Light Bowgun. Simply complete the appropriate quest to get that weapon’s Switch Skill.

The 5 star Hub Quests have the Great Sword, Hammer, Lance, Charge Blade, and Heavy Bowgun, while the 6 star quests have Long Sword, Dual Blades, Gunlance, Insect Glaive, and Bow.

Unlocking the Switch Skills in Monster Hunter Rise does require some grinding, but they’re well worth the effort, as they give you different playstyle options and are generally fun to use.
