Capcom has announced via Twitter that Monster Hunter Stories 2 has shipped over 1 million units. The game has received positive reception overall.
Unlike the mainline games, the Stories games are RPG games. It involves raising monsters and using them in battle Pokémon-style. Rather than hunters, there are Monster Riders that tame monsters.
The story follows the grandchild of the legendary Monster Rider Red investigating the mass disappearance of Rathalos around the world. Being entrusted with a Rathalos egg, a flightless Rathalos with small black wings burst from the egg. It is believed that this Rathalos is going to bring ruin to the world.
Monster Hunter Stories 2 has cross-compatibility with Monster Hunter Rise, such as cosmetic outfits from the other game.
While Capcom deems the sales numbers a success, there are still plans for post-content releases in the future. The first post-content release was released on July 15. This update added the Palamute form Monster Hunter Rise as a Monstie.
The August 5 update will see the arrival of the Mother Goddess of Gold, Kulve Taroth. Originating from Monster Hunter: World as a siege hunt, Kulve Taroth will be part of a co-op quest.
While Kulve Taroth cannot be raised, players will be awarded equipment.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is currently available on Nintendo Switch and PC. A PC port of Monster Hunter Rise is also scheduled for release in early 2022.
Furthermore, an animated film, Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild, is premiering on Netflix on August 12.
