MultiVersus: How To Play Velma

Updated:

Among the colorful cast of MultiVersus is the resident brains of the Mystery Inc. crew, Velma. Similar to her work in the investigation team, her role in this fighting game is to help out her teammates win the match as a Support character. Here’s how you can play Velma effectively in MultiVersus.

Why Play Velma

Most characters love brawling it out as both teams work on pushing each off the stage to win the round. However, Velma has other options rather than hitting her foes directly when she’s on the field.

As a Support character, Velma can buff and heal teammates from afar. She can also work to create space for her team without necessarily always trying to go near her foes. If you’re up for a fun character with a good mix of long-range and close attack options, Velma is a great pick to start with.

How To Win As Velma

Velma as seen in Multiversus matches

Set Your Team Up For Success

Velma works best when she sets her teammate up for success with her tools. Aside from directly hitting foes out of her teammate’s way, Velma has a Cooldown Reduction buff through her Sharing The Knowledge special.

Velma receives a Cooldown Reduction buff and sends a book flying toward her ally with this “Down+Special” attack. The book will clobber foes on its way to the ally and will also apply the same buff to her teammate. The buff enables characters to keep using the specials more in fights as it’ll be available again sooner.

Use Word Bubbles

This buff is one of many effects in MultiVersus and its utility may vary on Velma’s partner but is still definitely useful to learn how to play around it. It turns her Neutral Normal attack, Supportive Words, to rapid fire and allows her to shoot around six homing word bubbles in the match.

The first bubble will try to mark her ally but the enemy team can get hit and get marked instead. All of her succeeding bubbles will now chase the marked target. It is generally better if her ally gets the mark as the bubbles explode to deal damage and heal Velma at the same time.

Marking an enemy with Supportive Words will instead turn it into homing missiles that can force opponents to stop their offense if they don’t want to take all six hits at the same time.

Motivate and Heal

Velma can also heal her teammate through her Neutral Special attack, Motivational Speaker. She fires a straight beam through a megaphone that heals allies on contact and steadily damages enemies on contact. This move can be useful if the enemy team is focusing on Velma’s teammate.

Applying these long-range options can help take the pressure off Velma’s ally as foes may focus on her instead if she connects her long-range attacks for too long.

What Velma Players Should Avoid

Her team buffs may present Velma as a strong opponent in MultiVersus but she does have some flaws that you should take note of when learning how to play her. These flaws are:

  • Her moves can feel sluggish compared to the other characters more suited to fighting up close
  • Her moves can be poor in keeping opponents away from her without correct movement and repositioning
  • Her special passive, Snoopin’, takes too long to stack Evidence if her team doesn’t have momentum going
  • Selfishly trying to collect Evidence can lead to her teammate getting focused and taking too much damage

Snoopin’ Passive

Velma’s passive can feel strong as the Snoopin’ passive reward allows her to summon a police car to chase and knock out opponents in the match. The police car may look strong at first glance but it is too fragile to hold opponents in. Many players can break out of it easily with a teammate around.

Fast-Thinker Attack

Velma also has a useful grounded Side Special attack, Fast Thinker, where she runs forward and carries a character like she does with Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo series. This sprint can carry allies and enemies which can be useful in breaking up fights and saving teammates from pressure.

The worst part of this ally-saving move is that it can be interrupted easily due to its slow startup. Carelessly using the move may also force Velma to get hurt more and also possibly carry her and her teammate into unfavorable situations.

Take note of these tips when playing as her and you’ll be fine. Getting better in Multiversus can be a journey but we also have other pieces that can help you play better in this game down the line:
