“The World Ends with You” is an action role-playing game that takes place in a fictional version of Shibuya in two planes of existence: the Realground and Underground, with the latter the place where chosen dead are brought to and is also the location of the Reaper’s Game. The Reaper’s Game is a contest where participants earn the right to be brought to life or to become a higher form of spiritual existence.
The protagonist, Neku Sakuraba, participates in the Game, and the plot follows his journey through it while pairing with other characters along the way. The sequel will follow a new cast of characters playing the Reaper’s Game: Rindo, Fret, Nagi, and Minamimoto.
The original game utilized 2D graphics to differentiate itself with other Square Enix titles at the time. “NEO: The World Ends with You” moves into the realm of 3D, but still uses the “highly skewed and angular” background of Shibuya that was present in the original game.
An anime adaption was also announced in June 2020. Titled “The World Ends with You: The Animation,” the first episode is targeted for an April 2021 release, and will be modernized (such as characters using smartphones instead of flip phones), as the game and anime have over a decade long gap between them. Funimation will stream the anime.
