Streaming juggernaut Netflix has announced that the mobile RPG Relic Hunters: Rebels will be joining its gaming catalog on May 3, 2022. Coming for free to all subscribers, this colorful, cartoony action RPG is the first mobile title in the Relic Hunters series. Made by Brazilian developers Rogue Snail, Legends will feature four iconic characters from the series along with a plethora of new weapons for players to shoot space ducks with.

To commemorate the game’s launch, Rogue Snail CEO Mark Venturelli had a short discussion with Netflix about some of the inspirations behind the series and what he hopes Relic Hunters: Legends can achieve in Netflix’s new gaming space. “The idea that we could make games without worrying about monetization was also very compelling,” Venturelli explained, “as it allows us to focus on just making a fun game without having to worry about how to pay our bills.”

An interquel of sorts between Relic Hunters Zero and the upcoming Relic Hunters: Legend (both of which are available on PC via Steam), Rebels will include easter eggs to the series’ past while also pushing things forward in terms of character backstory. One of the main characters, Baru, identifies as non-binary and was included to allow Rogue Snail’s diverse team of developers to represent themselves within the game.

Elaborating on Baru, Venturelli said, “We want our players to feel embraced for who they are. We also believe that the gaming community is growing up and learning that making more people feel welcomed and accepted does not make the space any less so for dudes like me, aka a nerdy white guy. As long as we all respect each other, we can have a lot more fun together.”

You’ll be able to download Relic Hunters: Legend either through the Netflix app or on the Google Play and Apple App stores. Android users should see a dedicated “games” row on Netflix while iOS users will find it in a separate tab. The game should be live by the time you’re reading this.
