Nvidia Reflex is Available on Overwatch PTR

Published:

Nvidia Reflex is the company’s revolutionary technology that measures and reduce system latency in competitive games. In short, this means better response time when playing games that support the technology.

In typical graphics intensive games, the CPU queues up work in a render queue so the GPU always stays fed. While this helps maximize framerate, it also increases latency, as frames are waiting in line to be rendered.

The Reflex low-latency mode dynamically reduces the render queue by keeping the CPU perfectly in sync with the GPU.

Nvidia Reflex has already been added to Rainbow Six Siege’s test servers in February. Now, Reflex is available on the Overwatch Public Test Region.

According to Nvidia, you can see as much as a 50% reduction in system latency, which is a significant increase in responsiveness, especially to professional gamers. The effect appears to be more noticeable on older GPUs, as can be seen in the graph above.

Current testing on Overwatch appears to be successful. Players who wish to try this will need to update their Nvidia drivers first. After launching Overwatch in the PTR, head on over to the options menu and find the setting in the video tab.

The only requirement would be owning a GTX 900 series or newer GPU for those interested in trying it out. As mentioned, you will see a bigger impact if you’re using an older GPU, but you will have overall better latency with the more recent ones.

With the effectiveness of the technology, we can probably see this extending to more and more games. Hooray for low latency!
